It took Hegel 1600 pages of exasperated cerebration to put forth his theory of art Kant's theory is notoriously difficult to follow through the labyrinthine Kritik of Judg ment and Croce, effecting a remarkable simplifica tion of these studies, felt bound to effect it in a way so subtle and technical that his meaning is, to say the least, elusive on a first reading. A mere essay, however useful as a kind of site-plan for future building, cannot avoid dogmatism; and nothing can need more apology than that. Brevity also requires that I omit to point out where the theory I outline agrees, and where it disagrees, with the classical theories. I mentioned Croce just now. These are (i) the many excellent text-books on the subject that have appeared in the last twenty-five or thirty years; (2) books of what is called rhetorical analysis, approaching the study of composition through examination of distinguished stylists; (3) treatises on the main types of literary method, as description, narration, exposition, and argumentation, often accompanied by pre cept and rule for the writing of themes; and (4) books of general and wholesome counsel in literary affairs. Ex cluding these classes, one has left the very numerous essays on the theory of style, and it is the chief of these in English, written by distinguished authors, that are here presented. They are selected from a contemporary rather than a historical point of view, and taken collectively, they represent the more important bearings of the subject with as little repetition and in as much variety of idea as pos sible. Newman's essay may be regarded as an introduc tion, in that it states the general problem of literature. The essays of De Quincey, Spencer, and Lewes follow, with statements of general principles and exposition of methods of a suggestive and interesting sort. Stevenson, particularly, and Pater are somewhat more confined; and Mr. Harrison's essay is an example of the safe, practical talk, the name of which is legion. The tendency of this mistake was not only to minimize in religion the importance of the spiritual, because this was conceived to be the same in kind as the distinctively human in art; but to minimize in art also the importance of the material, - i. e., of the material product as given form through skill in technique, - because the whole desired effect was conceived to be attained, as in religion, by merely giving adequate and accurate expression to the results of inspiration. Emerson himself, not only in his practice but in his theory, almost always goes astray when he approaches this subject of art-form.
