Surely it was not the people that ever of their own choice appointed this form of government. There is no country worth inhabiting, but where all orders owe equal obedience to the laws. CHAP. LXXXIV. Of Charles VIII, and the state of Europe when he undertook the conquest of Naples. LEWIS XI left behind him one son, viz. Charles VIII, a prince only fourteen years of age, of a seeble constitution, and with little or no education, but postefled of the most powersul kingdom' in Europe. He left him also a civil war, the almost inseparable companion of minorities. The king indeed was not a minor according to the law of Charles V; but he was under age according to the law of nature. His eldest sister Anne, wise of the duke of Bourbon Baujeau, was by her father's will entrusted with the regency, which she really deserved. Lewis duke of Orleans, the first prince of the blood, who was afterwards that very king Lewis XII, whose memory is so dear to France, began with shewing himself the scourge of the state, to which he afterwards behaved himself as a father. On the one hand, his quality of first prince of the blood, so far from procuring him any share in the government, did not even give him the precedency over the other peers more ancient than himself. On the other, it . always seemed very odd, that a woman, whom the law excludes srom from the throne, should rule the state under another name. The duke of Orleans, excited by ambition (which excites even the most virtuous) engaged in a civil war against his sovereign, in order to be his guardian. The parliament of Paris perceived then the influence which it was likely one day to acquire in the case of minorities. The duke of Orleans addressed himself to this court, to obtain a decree for changing...

Of the first Crusade to the taking of Jerusalem. SUCH was the state of Asia Minor, when a pilgrim of Amiens raised up the crufades: he had then no other name besides Coucoupetre, ot Cucupietre, as we are told by the daughter of the emperor Comnenus, who faw this hermit at Constantinople; but he is known to us by the" name of Peter the- Hermit. However, this Pb- card, who had all the obstinacy of his country- men, was so exasperated at the exactions which he had sufsered at Jerufalem, and talked of them at his.return to Rome in such pathetic terms and in such lively colours, that Urban II. thouoht him a proper person to second the grand design the popes had for a long time formed of arming Christianity against Mahometism: he therefore sent Peter from province to province, to com- municate, by the force of his strong imagination, the warmth of his sentiments, and to- sow the seeds of enthusiasm. Book The Strange Persistence of Universal History in Political Thought

Download or read book The Strange Persistence of Universal History in Political Thought written by Brett Bowden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and explains the reasons why the idea of universal history, a form of teleological history which holds that all peoples are travelling along the same path and destined to end at the same point, persists in political thought. Prominent in Western political thought since the middle of the eighteenth century, the idea of universal history holds that all peoples can be situated in the narrative of history on a continuum between a start and an end point, between the savage state of nature and civilized modernity. Despite various critiques, the underlying teleological principle still prevails in much contemporary thinking and policy planning, including post-conflict peace-building and development theory and practice. Anathema to contemporary ideals of pluralism and multiculturalism, universal history means that not everyone gets to write their own story, only a privileged few. For the rest, history and future are taken out of their hands, subsumed and assimilated into other people’s narrative.

Book The History of Christianity

Download or read book The History of Christianity written by Dyron B. Daughrity and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity has been accused of being misogynistic, pro-slavery, and anti-science, and some say it is finally beginning its long decline. This book provides an entirely different side to the stories about this faith. Why did Christianity become the largest religion in the world? Is it because it was misogynistic, pro-slavery, anti-science, and set on condemning those who didn't join it? This book investigates many of the misconceptions about Christianity and argues that there are good reasons this faith has become the world's largest. The book includes chapters on various misconceptions related to the history of Christianity, such as the beliefs that Jesus was a meek and mild carpenter, the Roman emperor Constantine was insincere in his Christian faith, medieval Europe was devoutly Christian, and Christianity was anti-science. Each chapter explores how the historical misconception developed and spread, and offers what we now believe to be the historical truth contradicting the fiction. Excerpts from primary source documents provide evidence for the historical misconceptions and truths and help readers to respond critically to claims about Christian history.

Book From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy

Download or read book From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy written by Tim Stuart-Buttle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represent a period of remarkable intellectual vitality in British philosophy, as figures such as Hobbes, Locke, Hume, and Smith attempted to explain the origins and sustaining mechanisms of civil society. Their insights continue to inform how political and moral theorists think about the world in which we live. From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy reconstructs a debate which preoccupied contemporaries but which seems arcane to us today. It concerned the relationship between reason and revelation as the two sources of mankind's knowledge, particularly in the ethical realm: to what extent, they asked, could reason alone discover the content and obligatory character of morality? This was held to be a historical, rather than a merely theoretical question: had the philosophers of pre-Christian antiquity, ignorant of Christ, been able satisfactorily to explain the moral universe? What role had natural theology played in their ethical theories - and was it consistent with the teachings delivered by revelation? Much recent scholarship has drawn attention to the early-modern interest in two late Hellenistic philosophical traditions - Stoicism and Epicureanism. Yet in the English context, three figures above all - John Locke, Conyers Middleton, and David Hume - quite deliberately and explicitly identified their approaches with Cicero as the representative of an alternative philosophical tradition, critical of both the Stoic and the Epicurean: academic scepticism. All argued that Cicero provided a means of addressing what they considered to be the most pressing question facing contemporary philosophy: the relationship between moral philosophy and moral theology.

Book The Muslim Speaks

Download or read book The Muslim Speaks written by Khurram Hussain and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim Speaks reimagines Islam as a strategy for investigating the modern condition. Rather than imagining it as an issue external to a discrete West, Khurram Hussain constructs Islam as internal to the elaboration and expansion of the West. In doing so he reveals three discursive traps – that of ‘freedom’, ‘reason’ and ‘culture’ – that inhibit the availability of Islam as a feasible, critical interlocutor in Western deliberations about moral, intellectual and political concerns. Through close examination of this inhibition, Hussain posits that while Islamophobia is clearly a moral wrong, ‘depoliticization’ more accurately describes the problems associated with the lived experience of Muslims in the West and elsewhere. Weaving together his conclusions in the hope of a common world, Khurram Hussain boldy and quite radically deems that what Islam needs is not depoliticization, but infact repoliticization.
