Book Pre census Sources for Irish Demography

Download or read book Pre census Sources for Irish Demography written by Brian Gurrin and published by Four Courts Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how local historians can source and use the various censuses and universal taxation returns and a variety of other sources of the pre-census period to build up a population picture of a community or a local area. To set the scene, a brief history of enumeration in Ireland is outlined and the key population sources are introduced. The earliest sources considered in detail are the 1660 poll-tax return (commonly known as Pender's Census) and the hearth-tax rolls. All known available hearth-tax rolls are listed in an appendix. The various religious censuses of the eighteenth century are also examined and particular attention is paid to the most well known of these, the census of 1766. The use of non-census sources such as church and estate record is also considered. It is shown that these non-census sources can provide much useful information that would not be apparent from census substitutes. Problems with working with these sources are outlined and examples of population studies, both Irish and non-Irish, are given. Although this book is written with the local historian in mind it will also be of much interest to genealogists and family historians.

Book Rebellion in Kildare 1790 1803

Download or read book Rebellion in Kildare 1790 1803 written by Liam Chambers and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from 1790 to 1803, one of upheaval and turbulence, has witnessed a surge in historical interest in the past two decades. This study examines the politicisation and rebellion in County Kildare. During the 1790s, a vocal liberal establishment centered on the Duke of Leinster, Catholic and reformist politics, militant Defenderism, and a large United Irish society involving prominent liberals, all of which contributed to the politicisation of the Kildare populace. Against this background a faction loyal to the Dublin government attempted to stabilize and secure the county, with the increasing support of the administration. The 1798 rebellion engulfed Kildare, lasting two months and involving thousands of rebels. After initial success it evolved into a 'fugitive' war centered on the Bog of Allen, where rebels held government forces at bay for weeks. During the post-rebellion period radicalism persisted at a local level and thousands of Kildare men were prepared to participate in 'Emmet's rebellion' in 1803. In examining Kildare in this period the study seeks to contribute to the wider debate on the forces of radicalism and reaction which polarized Irish society in the 1790s. -- Publisher description.

Book In the Shadow of Adam Smith

Download or read book In the Shadow of Adam Smith written by Donald Rutherford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith, who has towered over economics for more than two hundred years, was not alone in Scotland in creating systems of analysis which would explain how economies function and prosper. Writers of various backgrounds – there being no such profession as 'economist' – who were inspired by issues of the day as well as by the writings of Smith and other Scots, made significant contributions to the development of economic theory and policy that are often overlooked today. In the Shadow of Adam Smith, a landmark work in the history of economic thought, surveys and integrates the ideas of eighty Scottish writers from the 18th and 19th centuries to reveal a startlingly rich tapestry of argument and debate on a wide variety of economic subjects, both philosophical and practical, that remain highly pertinent today. Government debt, economic growth, banking, credit, taxation – all were tackled by this remarkable, diverse collection of writers. Through reading their contributions to economics we both understand modern economic issues and thought more deeply, and gain a richer understanding of Adam Smith's thought and inheritance. Written in a crisp and readable style with a minimum of technical detail, this is an ideal book for students of the history of economics, as well as academics and general readers.
