Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Construction of Flutes: Giving a History and Description of the Most Recent Improvements, With an Explanation of the Principles of Acoustics Applicable to the Manufacture of Wind Instruments Mr. Rudall, however, did not care to publish the treatise. It was laid aside, and forgotten until quite lately; when, soon after Dohm's death, certain public attacks upon his character, coupled with a denial of the originality of his invention, drew from me a reply. This reminded Mr. Carte, the present repte sentative of the firm of Rudall Rose, that he possessed Dohm's own account of all the circumstances in dispute, and he was good enough to send it to me. The pamphlet, which is in dohm's own hand-writing, as I can vouch, has an interest of its own, wholly distinct from the facts relating to D'ohm's connection with Gordon. I imagine it will be read with no little pleasure by most ute players, whether professional or amateur, giving us, as it does, a clear and succinct summary of those principles of acoustics which are applicable to the con struction of all wind instruments. Badger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated History of the Flute, and Sketch of the Successive Improvements Made in the Flute, and a Statement of the Principles Upon Which Flutes Are Constructed: With a Description of the New or Boehm Flute This Flute has two great defects; it is out of tune some of its notes being too flat, and some too sharp and it varies in quality of tone - some of its notes being free and clear, and others feeble and muffled. The two prin cipal causes of these defects are, the unequal distribu tion of the holes, some being above and others below their correct position, and the existence of closed or shut keys. That these are the causes of the imperfections of this instrument will be demonstrated by a very brief ex amination of the principles upon which the fingered wind instruments are, or obviously should be, constructed. Book excerpt: "It was estimated in 1829 that one man in ten in London played the flute. Players, teachers, composers and makers competed for their share of the vast market for anything to do with the flute. Much of the history of the flute in the nineteenth century is based on the works in this collection, which includes descriptions of newly-invented flutes, arguments about their relative merits and some extraordinary battles between rival makers and players."--Publisher's description.
