Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a close examination of one of Shakespeare's most controversial characters: Prince Hal/Henry V. From his early tavern dalliances with Sir John Falstaff, to his assumption of the English throne, to his military successes and marriage, the analysis weighs his many disparate qualities, such as charm, aggression, wit, and faith, as well as his relationship to questions about power, religion, and morality that dominate Shakespeare's history plays. The study also links this complex figure to electoral issues and strategies of our own day.

Download or read book An Essay on the Character of Henry the Fifth When Prince of Wales Classic Reprint written by Alexander Luders and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Character of Henry the Fifth, When Prince of Wales I shall endeavour to regain the truth of history for the character of this great Prince in his youth, because it has been hidden in obscurity, or represented in fable. Not having been able to find sufficient authority for the wanton and dissolute character assigned to him in the plays of Shakespear, and that older play which he seems to have followed, I suspect that they are almost as fabulous as Ovid's Metamorphoses. Book The Role of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V

Download or read book The Role of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V written by Andrea Oberheiden and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1-, Harvard University (Department of English), course: Shakespeare and Modern Culture, language: English, abstract: At first view, the Chorus in Shakespeare’s Henry V simply seems to serve two main practical purposes: to lead the audience through the play as regards content, and to form the audience's view on the character of King Henry V himself. The Chorus with his announcements, explanations, apologies, and appeals to the audience, while itself not being part of the diegetic world, underscores the assumption that the Chorus, represented by one single character, functions as a presenter of the play in general and of each act in particular with the rather practical aim to lead the audience through several changes of time and scene: "Carry them [the kings] here and there, jumping o’er times" (1.29). But understanding that as a reason or even as a justification for the existence of the Chorus in Henry V, the question has to be raised why a chorus, which is after all rarely used in Shakespeare’s other plays, is used specifically in this play. There are numerous Shakespearean plays in which a unifying authority would have been highly useful because of a complex structure of the particular play in regard to time and setting such as in Macbeth, King Lear, or The Merchant of Venice, to mention just a few.

Here, noted historian and biographer Ian Mortimer takes a look at the man behind the legend and offers a clear, historically accurate, and realistic representation of a ruler who was all too human—and digs up fascinating details about Henry V’s reign that have been lost to history, including the brutal strategies he adopted at the Battle of Agincourt. “The most illuminating exploration of the reality of 15th-century life that I have ever read.” —The Independent “Compelling, exuberant . . . vivid.” —Simon Sebag Montefiore, New York Times–bestselling author of The Romanovs: 1613–1918

Download or read book King Henry V written by Joseph Candido and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its depiction of the victorious English king, Henry V has divided critical opinion and remains one of the more controversial of Shakespeare's histories. This new volume in Shakespeare: The Critical Tradition increases our knowledge of how Shakespeare's plays were received and understood by critics, editors and general readers. The volume offers, in separate sections, both critical opinions about the play across the centuries and an evaluation of their positions within and their impact on the reception of the play. The chronological arrangement of the text-excerpts engages the readers in a direct and unbiased dialogue, whereas the introduction offers a critical evaluation from a current stance, including modern theories and methods. Thus the volume makes a major contribution to our understanding of the play and of the traditions of Shakespearean criticism surrounding it as they have developed from century to century.
