Book A Companion to Eighteenth Century Poetry

Download or read book A Companion to Eighteenth Century Poetry written by Christine Gerrard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COMPANION TO & EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY POETRY A COMPANION TO & EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY POETRY Edited by Christine Gerrard This wide-ranging Companion reflects the dramatic transformation that has taken place in the study of eighteenth-century poetry over the past two decades. New essays by leading scholars in the field address an expanded poetic canon that now incorporates verse by many women poets and other formerly marginalized poetic voices. The volume engages with topical critical debates such as the production and consumption of literary texts, the constructions of femininity, sentiment and sensibility, enthusiasm, politics and aesthetics, and the growth of imperialism. The Companion opens with a section on contexts, considering eighteenth-century poetry’s relationships with such topics as party politics, religion, science, the visual arts, and the literary marketplace. A series of close readings of specific poems follows, ranging from familiar texts such as Pope’s The Rape of the Lock to slightly less well-known works such as Swift’s “Stella” poems and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Town Eclogues. Essays on forms and genres, and a series of more provocative contributions on significant themes and debates, complete the volume. The Companion gives readers a thorough grounding in both the background and the substance of eighteenth-century poetry, and is designed to be used alongside David Fairer and Christine Gerrard’s Eighteenth-Century Poetry: An Annotated Anthology (3rd edition, 2014).

Book excerpt: During his tenure as the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1905-1919, Sir William Osler amassed a considerable library on the history of medicine and science. A Canadian native, Osler had studied at McGill University and decided to leave his collection of 7,600 items to its Faculty of Medicine. A catalogue, the Bibliotheca Osleriana, was compiled - a labour of love that took ten years to complete and involved W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill, and Archibald Malloch. Osler himself laid down the broad outlines of the catalogue and wrote many of the annotations.

Book Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Classic Reprint written by William Temple and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Temple's fame has waned since the days when the essays here reprinted were Pope's favourite prose; but these still maintain their historical importance, for they represent a turning point in the development of English style, and in them something of the tone and temper of the eighteenth-century essay are already apparent. Goldsmith need not have told us that Temple's style was 'the model by which the best prose writers in the reign of Queen Anne formed theirs', nor Swift that Temple 'advanced our English tongue to as great perfection as it can well bear'; to read aloud a single essay is to discover for oneself this forgotten secret. Johnson suggested to Boswell at least one of the causes of this reforming power: 'Sir William Temple was the first writer who gave cadence to English prose. Before his time they were careless of arrangement, and did not mind whether a sentence ended with an important word or an insignificant word, or with what part of speech it was concluded.' Book Nature Knowledge in Modern Poetry

Download or read book Nature Knowledge in Modern Poetry written by Alexander MacKie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Knowledge in Modern Poetry: Being Chapters on Tennyson, Wordsworth, Matthew Arnold, and Lowell as Exponents of Nature-Study While lovers of Poetry are pleased to see N ature - study finding a place in every school, they hail the innovation all the more that it is likely to add fresh interest to the study Of Poetry in which accurate N ature-references are part of the charm. The study of flowers, of insects and birds will throw a new zest into the study of poets who are rich in natural history allusions. It is because I think such knowledge is doubly charming and humanising when clothed in poetic language and judiciously used for poetic embellishment, that I have striven to garner the best material of this kind from four poets, who, while they are all devotees of Nature, show considerable dif ference in their presentation of scientific facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Nature Studies: With Lectures The essays and articles here presented to the reader repro sent for the most part the outcome of the thoughts and studies and observations of a busy man, made in the intervals of his severer labours. Their author was, in his active days, a mathe matician of repute, a profound scholar, a man of long experience in educational work, both by pen and voice, and a painstaking editor and registrar. The contents of the volume comprehend two classes or descriptions of literature, yet the dividing line is withal so fine that the two blend happily. There are in the first part of the volume some papers on the observation of Nature and kindred subjects, some of them reprinted from the pages of Nature Notes, and other journals, which are not inaptly termed Nature Studies. They have no pretence to be scientific articles, and are collected and printed here because it is believed that they present enough of observation of Nature and her ways, coupled with enough of good English and happily conveyed directions for the profitable employment of leisure time, to warrant their preservation.
