Book The Country Printer

Download or read book The Country Printer written by William Dean Howells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Printer: An Essay As long as he remained in business he remained a country editor and a country printer; he began to study medicine when he was a young man, but he abandoned it for the calling of his life without regret, and, though with his speculative and in ventive temperament he was tempted to experi ment in other things, I do not think he would ever have lastingly forsaken his newspaper for them. In fact, the art of printing was in our blood; it never brought us great honor or profit; and we were always planning and dreaming to get out of it, or get it out of us; but we are all in some sort bound up with it still. To me it is now so endeared by the associations of childhood that I cannot breathe the familiar odor of types and presses without emotion; and I should not be sur prised if I found myself trying to cast a halo of romance about the old-fashioned country office in what I shall have to say of it here. Book Eighteenth Century Colour Prints

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Colour Prints written by Julia Frankau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth Century Colour Prints An Essay on Certain Stipple Engravers & Their Work in Colour was written by the British novelist Julia Frankau. While Frankau wrote many novels over the course of her life, she spent her later years focused more heavily on non-fiction works with subjects ranging from printing, to artwork, and engraving. This particular book focuses on printing and engraving, specifically as it pertains to the creation of full color images in books. The illustration of books includes both full color images and the large intricately colored letters at the beginning of chapters is a practice almost as old as the written word itself. In her book, Frankau aims to enlighten readers who are curious about the creation of color images in print and the process by which images are colored for books. The text thoroughly describes both how the artist forms letters and images and how the artist colors these for publication. Frankau expresses the fervent hope that her book will grant the reader a full understanding of the proper procedure for creating and printing color in books.. Eighteenth Century Colour Prints An Essay on Certain Stipple Engravers & Their Work in Colour is an interesting book for any art student, printer, publisher, book aficionado, or historian. Julia Frankau presents a thoroughly engaging and understandable discussion on the proper way to create and print color images in books. This book is a great resource for readers interested in the topic of color prints and for readers interested in the history of books and publishing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essay upon prints By William Gilpin Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724-1804) is best known for his works on the picturesque. His approach as a teacher was enlightened: during his time as headmaster of Cheam School, his aim was to prepare his pupils for life. Moving in 1777 to become vicar of Boldre, Hampshire, where he remained for the rest of his life, he was able to endow two schools there with income from his successful writings. This knowledgeable appraisal of the print as an art form, and of its foremost practitioners, was first published anonymously in 1768 to positive reviews. It defines picturesque as 'a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture'. Gilpin further developed and explored the concept in his volumes of Observations on various parts of Britain, which are also reissued in this series.
