First published in 1690, it set the agenda for modern philosophy and influenced psychology and political theory. ‘An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Volume One,’ covers Locke’s attempts to discover where our ideas come from, what it means to have an idea and what an idea actually is. He also discusses theories on free will and personal identity, outlining the notion of the blank slate at birth or tabula rasa, which is then filled in by experience of the world. Regarded as Locke’s most powerful and important philosophical work, ‘An Essay on Human Understanding’ still resonates today. John Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher and political theorist, whose work built the foundations of modern liberalism, political theory and economics. Commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism" he is widely regarded as one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers. Locke’s ideas on ‘identity’ and ‘self’ and the notion we are born with a ‘blank slate’, helped shape the work of philosophers such as Kant, Rousseau and Voltaire, while his essays on religious tolerance were an early model for the separation of church and state. The American Declaration of Independence was influenced by Locke’s political ideas on government, creating the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed by Americans today.

The understanding, like the eye, whilst it makes us see and perceive all other things, takes no notice of itself; and it requires and art and pains to set it at a distance and make it its own object. These are speculations which, however curious and entertaining, I shall decline, as lying out of my way in the design I am now upon. It shall suffice to my present purpose, to consider the discerning faculties of a man, as they are employed about the objects which they have to do with. And I shall imagine I have not wholly misemployed myself in the thoughts I shall have on this occasion, if, in this historical, plain method, I can give any account of the ways whereby our understandings come to attain those notions of things we have; and can set down any measures of the certainty of our knowledge; or the grounds of those persuasions which are to be found amongst men, so various, different, and wholly contradictory; and yet asserted somewhere or other with such assurance and confidence, that he that shall take a view of the opinions of mankind, observe their opposition, and at the same time consider the fondness and devotion wherewith they are embraced, the resolution and eagerness wherewith they are maintained, may perhaps have reason to suspect, that either there is no such thing as truth at all, or that mankind hath no sufficient means to attain a certain knowledge of it. 3. Method. It is therefore worth while to search out the bounds between opinion and knowledge; and examine by what measures, in things whereof we have no certain knowledge, we ought to regulate our assent and moderate our persuasion. In order whereunto I shall pursue this following method:— First, I shall inquire into the original of those ideas, notions, or whatever else you please to call them, which a man observes, and is conscious to himself he has in his mind; and the ways whereby the understanding comes to be furnished with them.

Book excerpt: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a work by John Locke concerning the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. Locke describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. A dominant theme of the Essay is the question: What is the capacity of the human mind for understanding and knowledge? The Essay’s influence was enormous, perhaps as great as that of any other philosophical work apart from those of Plato and Aristotle. Its importance in the English-speaking world of the 18th century can scarcely be overstated. Along with the works of Descartes, it constitutes the foundation of modern Western philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding-Volume 1' is a groundbreaking work by John Locke that explores the nature of human knowledge and understanding. In the book's first volume, Locke argues that the human mind is like a blank slate, or "tabula rasa," at birth and that all knowledge is acquired through experience and observation. Locke delves into the mechanics of human perception and cognition, exploring the ways in which we acquire knowledge and form beliefs about the world around us. He argues that all knowledge is ultimately derived from sensory experience and that our understanding of the world is shaped by the way our minds process and interpret this sensory input. Throughout the book, Locke provides a rigorous and detailed analysis of the workings of the human mind, examining everything from the nature of ideas and concepts to the role of language and communication in shaping our understanding of the world. 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding' is a foundational work in the field of philosophy, and continues to be studied and debated by scholars to this day.

B ▶ THE EPISTLE TO THE READER. READER, To explain this a little more particularly. By DETERMINATE, when applied to a simple idea, I mean that simple appearance which the mind has in its view, or perceives in itself, when that idea is said to be in it: by DETERMINED, when applied to a complex idea, I mean such an one as consists of a determinate number of certain simple or less complex ideas, joined in such a proportion and situation as the mind has before its view, and sees in itself, when that idea is present in it, or should be present in it, when a man gives a name to it. ▶ I know there are not words enough in any language to answer all the variety of ideas that enter into men’s discourses and reasonings. But this hinders not but that when any one uses any term, he may have in his mind a determined idea, which he makes it the sign of, and to which he should keep it steadily annexed during that present discourse. ▶ CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION. 1. An Inquiry into the Understanding pleasant and useful. Since it is the UNDERSTANDING that sets man above the rest of sensible beings, and gives him all the advantage and dominion which he has over them; it is certainly a subject, even for its nobleness, worth our labour to inquire into. The understanding, like the eye, whilst it makes us see and perceive all other things, takes no notice of itself; and it requires and art and pains to set it at a distance and make it its own object. ▶ CHAPTER I. OF IDEAS IN GENERAL, AND THEIR ORIGINAL. 1. Idea is the Object of Thinking. Every man being conscious to himself that he thinks; and that which his mind is applied about whilst thinking being the IDEAS that are there, it is past doubt that men have in their minds several ideas,—such as are those expressed by the words whiteness, hardness, sweetness, thinking, motion, man, elephant, army, drunkenness, and others: it is in the first place then to be inquired, HOW HE COMES BY THEM? ▶ CHAPTER XXXIII. OF THE ASSOCIATION OF IDEAS. 1. Something unreasonable in most Men. There is scarce any one that does not observe something that seems odd to him, and is in itself really extravagant, in the opinions, reasonings, and actions of other men. The least flaw of this kind, if at all different from his own, every one is quick-sighted enough to espy in another, and will by the authority of reason forwardly condemn; though he be guilty of much greater unreasonableness in his own tenets and conduct, which he never perceives, and will very hardly, if at all, be convinced of. 영국 최초의 경험론자(the first of the British empiricists) 02. 관용에 관한 편지(A Letter Concerning Toleration, 1689) 04. 통치론(Two Treatises of Government, 1689) 05. 인간지성론(An Essay concerning Human Understanding, 1690) 06. 1689(An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, Volume 1 By John Locke) My Lord(Tribute) The Epistle To The Reader Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. ▶ CHAPTER I. OF WORDS OR LANGUAGE IN GENERAL. 1. Man fitted to form articulated Sounds. God, having designed man for a sociable creature, made him not only with an inclination, and under a necessity to have fellowship with those of his own kind, but furnished him also with language, which was to be the great instrument and common tie of society. Man, therefore, had by nature his organs so fashioned, as to be fit to frame articulate sounds, which we call words. But this was not enough to produce language; for parrots, and several other birds, will be taught to make articulate sounds distinct enough, which yet by no means are capable of language. ▶ CHAPTER IV. OF THE REALITY OF KNOWLEDGE. 1. Objection. 'To what purpose all this stir? Knowledge, say you, is only the perception of the agreement or disagreement of our own ideas: but who knows what those ideas may be? Is there anything so extravagant as the imaginations of men's brains? Where is the head that has no chimeras in it? Or if there be a sober and a wise man, what difference will there be, by your rules, between his knowledge and that of the most extravagant fancy in the world? They both have their ideas, and perceive their agreement and disagreement one with another. ▶ CHAPTER XXI. OF THE DIVISION OF THE SCIENCES. 1. Science may be divided into three sorts. All that can fall within the compass of human understanding, being either, FIRST, the nature of things, as they are in themselves, their relations, and their manner of operation: or, SECONDLY, that which man himself ought to do, as a rational and voluntary agent, for the attainment of any end, especially happiness: or, THIRDLY, the ways and means whereby the knowledge of both the one and the other of these is attained and communicated; I think science may be divided properly into these three sorts:— ▷ 제21장. 1. 영국 최초의 경험론자(the first of the British empiricists) 02. 관용에 관한 편지(A Letter Concerning Toleration, 1689) 04. 통치론(Two Treatises of Government, 1689) 05. 인간지성론(An Essay concerning Human Understanding, 1690) 06. 1689(An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, Volume 2 By John Locke) My Lord(Tribute) The Epistle To The Reader Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. ▷ Book III.
