Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Locke's (1632-1704) reputation as an English philosopher in the history of Western thought rests above all on his An Essay concerning Humane Understanding. In this, the founding document of British Empiricism, Locke attempted a complete account of human knowledge, its origin, scope and limits. He attacked the long-held Rationalist doctrine of innate ideas and argued instead for the primacy of sense experience: the mind at birth is a tabula rasa - a receptive blank slate on which all knowledge is inscribed by experience. and Hume in Britain to Voltaire and many others on the European mainland. By 1800 it had been issued in 56 different editions and translations, not counting abridgements. Thoemmes Press presents large-format facsimile editions of two of the most important. The first issue of the first edition affords scholars the chance to read Locke's text in the precise version that confronted his earliest readers in 1690. And the fifth edition (1706) contains expansions to all four books, as well as excerpts from Locke's important Letters to and from Bishop Edward Stillingfleet - changes anticipated in a codicil to Locke's will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding-Volume 1' is a groundbreaking work by John Locke that explores the nature of human knowledge and understanding. In the book's first volume, Locke argues that the human mind is like a blank slate, or "tabula rasa," at birth and that all knowledge is acquired through experience and observation. Locke delves into the mechanics of human perception and cognition, exploring the ways in which we acquire knowledge and form beliefs about the world around us. He argues that all knowledge is ultimately derived from sensory experience and that our understanding of the world is shaped by the way our minds process and interpret this sensory input. Throughout the book, Locke provides a rigorous and detailed analysis of the workings of the human mind, examining everything from the nature of ideas and concepts to the role of language and communication in shaping our understanding of the world. 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding' is a foundational work in the field of philosophy, and continues to be studied and debated by scholars to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a work by John Locke concerning the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. It first appeared in 1689 (although dated 1690) with the printed title An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. He describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. The essay was one of the principal sources of empiricism in modern philosophy, and influenced many enlightenment philosophers, such as David Hume and George Berkeley.Book I of the Essay is Locke's attempt to refute the rationalist notion of innate ideas. Book II sets out Locke's theory of ideas, including his distinction between passively acquired simple ideas, such as "red," "sweet," "round," etc., and actively built complex ideas, such as numbers, causes and effects, abstract ideas, ideas of substances, identity, and diversity. Locke also distinguishes between the truly existing primary qualities of bodies, like shape, motion and the arrangement of minute particles, and the secondary qualities that are "powers to produce various sensations in us" such as "red" and "sweet." These secondary qualities, Locke claims, are dependent on the primary qualities. He also offers a theory of personal identity, offering a largely psychological criterion. Book III is concerned with language, and Book IV with knowledge, including intuition, mathematics, moral philosophy, natural philosophy ("science"), faith, and opinion.

Book excerpt: John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding is among the most important books in philosophy ever written. It is also a difficult work dealing with many themes, including the origin of ideas; the extent and limits of human knowledge; the philosophy of perception; and religion and morality. This volume is original in that it focuses on the last two of these topics and provides a clear and insightful survey of these overlooked aspects of Locke's best known work. Four eminent Locke scholars present authoritative discussions of Locke's view on the ethics of belief, personal identity, free will and moral theory. Contributors include John Passmore (Australian National University), Harold Noonan (Birmingham University), Vere Chappell (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Daniel Flage (James Madison University).
