Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of Niebuhr's History of Rome: With Chronological Tables, and an Appendix The young student in history may have found, in the original work, that his own stock of historical knowledge is scarcely adequate to the demands which a mind like Niebuhr's is continually making upon This difficulty has been obviated, to a certain extent, in the present epitome, inasmuch, as wherever the allusion to events in modern history were introduced by Niebuhr, merely as illustrative of an argument already established, and therefore not necessary as links in the chain of his reasoning, they have been altogether omitted, or but slightly noticed. With re gard to the views which Niebuhr has formed of the general history, and of the development of the con stitution of Rome, the student must determine for himself the degree of weight in their favour: there is at least a consistency and harmony in them, which may be sought for in vain in the received and popular accounts. Book An Epitome of Niebuhr s History of Rome Vol 2

Download or read book An Epitome of Niebuhr s History of Rome Vol 2 written by Travers Twiss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of Niebuhr's History of Rome, Vol. 2: With Chronological Tables and an Appendix The third volume of the History of Rome, to the future publication of which Niebuhr alludes in his preface to the second, and which he had intended to complete "after a short interval of rest," has not been transmitted to us in the perfection of the original design. Before the final revision could take place, the author was no more, and the hand, the last touches of which were still wanting to give full life to the work, was itself at rest for ever. For those, however, who love to look into the mirror of the past, and to trace the working of the political and social as well as of the moral laws of this world, whose delight it may have been to accompany Niebuhr in his researches into the dark and mysterious period of Roman history, and not to start away and leave him whenever he has led them forth into the light, it must doubtless have been a consolation, though a painful one, to know, that though the eye which had pierced through the mist was now quenched in slumber, it had surveyed the path for some distance in advance, and had noted down its observations for their guidance.
