Book Compendium of Grecian Antiquities

Download or read book Compendium of Grecian Antiquities written by Charles D. Cleveland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of Grecian Antiquities The present "Compendium of Grecian Antiquities" has been entirely re-written, and contains nearly three times as much matter as the "Epitome," under which title it first appeared. The author would therefore hope, that it will be found to be improved in some proportion, at least, to the labor and care which have been bestowed upon it. The marginal references, now first introduced, will answer the purpose of questions for examination, while the Index to all the Greek words and phrases will, he trusts, make his work more valuable as a book of reference. The first edition of this work, under the title of "An Epitome of Grecian Antiquities," was published in the Spring of 1827, when I was a senior in Dartmouth College. When Professor of Languages in Dickinson College in this state, it was re-written, enlarged nearly three-fold, and published under the present title. It passed through very many editions, haying been adopted as a text-book in some of the best colleges and academies in the country. Owing to many circumstances which it is unnecessary to mention, (one of which was the failure of the publishing house in Boston,) it went out of print, and, as copies were difficult to be had, consequently out of use. Lately, however, I have come into the possession of the stereotype plates myself, and having had them thoroughly revised, and having corrected some errors in them, I commit the work again to the public, asking for it nothing more than as much favor as for many years it received; for I know not how I could, even now, make a better book upon the same subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classical Manual: An Epitome of Ancient Geography, Greek and Roman Mythology, Antiquities, and Chronology; Chiefly Intended for the Use of Schools Many excellent works have recently issued from the press, which, either separately or in the form of dictionaries, treat of the subjects of the following pages: and yet the want of an Epitome has been recognized, which would contain, in the compass of a single volume, of small size and moderate price, as much information upon such points as is calculated to elucidate the Greek and Roman authors usually read in the junior forms of our schools. It has been the object of the compiler of the present manual to supply this deficiency by introducing into it such details as are most likely to be useful (indeed much of which is absolutely necessary to the classical student) in so small a space as to admit of its being thoroughly mastered and retained. Although at first the requirements of junior forms were chiefly contemplated, yet in the progress of the work so much additional matter has been supplied as, it is hoped, will render it not unacceptable to more advanced students. Book A Translation of the Grecian Antiquities of Lambert Bos

Download or read book A Translation of the Grecian Antiquities of Lambert Bos written by Lambert Bos and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Translation of the Grecian Antiquities of Lambert Bos: To Which Is Added an Appendix Potter and others. These, for the most part, have been inserted as they are condensed by Cleveland in his Epitome of Grecian Antiquities, published in America. The chapters on the and Education at Sparta, were chiefly compiled from Cragius, ale Republica La cedcemom'orum; the tables of money, weights, and measures, from Dr. Arbuthnot. It was deemed un necessary to increase the bulk of the work by subjoin ing the authorities to the Appendix, as they may easily be consulted in the originals. As to the translation, it was at first intended only to have reprinted that by Mr. Stockdale, with the addition of Zeune's notes: but this was afterwards found imprac ticable, as the language, generally, was too antiquated, and the translation itself incorrect. We have, however, made his the basis of the present work, although nearly one half has been translated afresh. The occasional additions in the body of the work from Heeren, Boeckh, &c. Are marked with an obelisk in brackets. The trans lator, already under great obligations to Mr. Bailey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
