Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epistle, Containing a Word of Exhortation, Counsel and Warning, to Friends, and Such as Make a Profession of the Truth And thou Zion-ward traveller, who art groaning to be delivered from the bondage of corruption, thy secret mourning and travail of spirit hath reached even unto the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth wherefore be not dis mayed nor cast down because of these things, nor be tempted to turn aside in the hour when the combined powers of darkness may seem to be let loose to try thee; for though he may be permitted to cause thee a hard struggle, the Lord's furnace is still in Jerusalem, and he graciously designs, if thou wouldst be his devoted servant and follower, to disentangle thee from every thing that would let and hinder thee in thy heavenward journey. Wherefore faint not, I beseech thee, at the tribulations and besetments which abound, for sorrow endureth but for the night season, and those who are enabled to endure that revolution of seasons which constitute the Lord's year, will bring forth the fruits of each, and witness their joy in Him to flow, in the breaking forth of the morning light; which will, in its due and appointed time, shine upon them, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epistle of Counsel, From the Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, Held in London, 1835 It was not as speculative doctrine, that they sought to propagate the Truth. They believed it had been much obscured during the long apostacy of the Christian church; that the authority of man had largely superseded the true spiritual authority of Christ, and that outward rites and signs of service had been substituted for the true allegiance of the heart to Him. Book A Stranger in the House of God

Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Download or read book Bullies and Saints written by John Dickson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the world better off without Christianity? Combining narrative with keen critique of contemporary debates, author and historian John Dickson gives an honest account of 2,000 years of Christian history that helps us understand what Christianity is and what it's meant to be. To say that the Christian Church has an "image problem" doesn't quite capture it. From the Crusades and the Inquisition to the racism and abuse present in today's Church--both in Catholic and Protestant traditions--the institution that Christ established on earth has a lot to answer for. But the Church has also had moments throughout history when it has been in tune with Jesus' teachings--from the rise of charity to the invention of hospitals. For defenders of the faith, it's important to be able to recognize the good and bad in the church's history and be inspired to live aligned with Christ. For skeptics, this book is a thought-provoking introduction to the idea that Christianity is, despite all, an essential foundation of our civilization. Bullies and Saints will take you on a big-picture journey from the Sermon on the Mount to the modern church: Giving contextual accounts of infamous chapters of Christian history, such as the Crusades, and acknowledging their darkness. Outlining the great movements of the faith and defending its heroes and saints, some of whom are not commonly recognized. Examining the Church beside the teachings and life of Jesus and how it has succeeded in its mission to imitate Christ.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
