Book An Epigrammatist s Epic Edification

Download or read book An Epigrammatist s Epic Edification written by A. Fitzgerald Morris and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all started one late night in February of 2013 while I was playing City Story Metro, one of my favorite online simulation games on my iPad. This game requires you to communicate with others in order to build your city. One person in the community always answered in a tongue twister, and I thought that was very clever. I decided that I wanted to try my hand at it. The initial process had me laughing so hard that I gave myself a headache. I thought, “I am really on to something here”. Once I started posting my tongue twisters as responses, the community went nuts! People were saving my days-of-the-week tongue twisters in their inboxes for weeks! After a period of time, someone suggested I not post anymore and have them published. “What a great idea!” I thought. I immediately stopped all postings of them. A few months later, I got the idea of incorporating my tongue twisters into greeting cards. I proceeded to make my first one, and the recipient just loved it! Spurred on by their enthusiastic response, I then proceeded to send out more to friends and family. They loved theirs as well. One text from my sister-in-law said, “Best. Birthday. Card. Ever! Thank you so much!” That was confirmation for me to attempt a business with this. Since then, I have sold some and have made many more. Now I am branching out into other greeting card occasions such as Mother’s/Father’s Day cards, Valentine’s Day cards, and thank-you cards, just to name a few.

Book A Companion to Ancient Epigram

Download or read book A Companion to Ancient Epigram written by Christer Henriksén and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightful look at the epic literary history of the short, poetic genre of the epigram From Nestor’s inscribed cup to tombstones, bathroom walls, and Twitter tweets, the ability to express oneself concisely and elegantly, continues to be an important part of literary history unlike any other. This book examines the entire history of the epigram, from its beginnings as a purely epigraphic phenomenon in the Greek world, where it moved from being just a note attached to physical objects to an actual literary form of expression, to its zenith in late 1st century Rome, and further through a period of stagnation up to its last blooming, just before the beginning of the Dark Ages. A Companion to Ancient Epigram offers the first ever full-scale treatment of the genre from a broad international perspective. The book is divided into six parts, the first of which covers certain typical characteristics of the genre, examines aspects that are central to our understanding of epigram, and discusses its relation to other literary genres. The subsequent four parts present a diachronic history of epigram, from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, and Latin and Greek epigrams at Rome, all the way up to late antiquity, with a concluding section looking at the heritage of ancient epigram from the Middle Ages up to modern times. Provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the epigram The first single-volume book to examine the entire history of the genre Scholarly interest in Greek and Roman epigram has steadily increased over the past fifty years Looks at not only the origins of the epigram but at the later literary tradition A Companion to Ancient Epigram will be of great interest to scholars and students of literature, world literature, and ancient and general history. It will also be an excellent addition to the shelf of any public and university library.

Book Lykophron Alexandra

Download or read book Lykophron Alexandra written by Lykophron and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally ascribed to the early third-century BCE tragedian Lykophron, the Alexandra is a powerful Greek poem by an unknown author, probably written c. 190, when Rome had defeated Hannibal and the Carthaginians and was poised to humble the Seleukid king Antiochos III. The poem is an ingeniously constructed masterpiece, a generic mix with elements of tragedy, epic, and history. Priam's beautiful daughter, the prophetic Kassandra, foresees her rape in Athena's temple by the hateful Greek warrior Ajax after Troy's fall, and warns of disastrous returns (nostoi) for all the Greek 'heroes'. But Troy will rise again as Rome, founded by Trojan refugees. Alexandra (another name for Kassandra), narrates these Mediterranean foundation myths, adopting a bitterly disillusioned female perspective, but culminating in prophecies of Roman rule over land and sea.

Book Martial

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Fitzgerald
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2021-07-05
  • ISBN : 0226252558
  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book Martial written by William Fitzgerald and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this age of the sound bite, what sort of author could be more relevant than a master of the epigram? Martial, the most influential epigrammatist of classical antiquity, was just such a virtuoso of the form, but despite his pertinence to today’s culture, his work has been largely neglected in contemporary scholarship. Arguing that Martial is a major author who deserves more sustained attention, William Fitzgerald provides an insightful tour of his works, shedding new and much-needed light on the Roman poet’s world—and how it might speak to our own. Writing in the late first century CE—when the epigram was firmly embedded in the social life of the Roman elite—Martial published his poems in a series of books that were widely read and enjoyed. Exploring what it means to read such a collection of epigrams, Fitzgerald examines the paradoxical relationship between the self-enclosed epigram and the book of poems that is more than the sum of its parts. And he goes on to show how Martial, by imagining these books being displayed in shops and shipped across the empire to admiring readers, prophetically behaved like a modern author. Chock-full of epigrams itself—in both Latin and English versions—Fitzgerald’s study will delight classicists, literary scholars, and anyone who appreciates an ingenious witticism.
