Book Making the Move to RDA

Download or read book Making the Move to RDA written by Chamya Pompey Kincy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the Move to RDA: A Self-Study Primer for Catalogers is aimed at catalogers working in the MARC environment who currently create records using AACR2 and need to transition to using the new standard, Resource Description and Access (RDA). Since both RDA’s structure and content differ from AACR2 in many respects, this primer details the development and rationale for RDA as well as its intended goals, principles, and objectives. It then explains RDA’s theoretical underpinnings—collectively known as the FRBR Family of Models. Framing the text along these lines provides readers the context for understanding the similarities and differences between AACR2 and RDA, both in terms of content and structure. With this foundation in place, the book takes the reader on a survey of RDA elements used to describe bibliographic and authority records and demonstrates how the MARC code has been expanded to accommodate new elements. Finally, it leads the reader field-by-field through MARC bibliographic records for book and non-book resources as well as through authority records for works, expressions, persons, families, and corporate bodies, describing the similarities and differences between AACR2 and RDA for each field. Examples are provided throughout the text to help the reader visualize the concepts presented.

Book Death beyond Disavowal

Download or read book Death beyond Disavowal written by Grace Kyungwon Hong and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death beyond Disavowal utilizes “difference” as theorized by women of color feminists to analyze works of cultural production by people of color as expressing a powerful antidote to the erasures of contemporary neoliberalism. According to Grace Kyungwon Hong, neoliberalism is first and foremost a structure of disavowal enacted as a reaction to the successes of the movements for decolonization, desegregation, and liberation of the post–World War II era. It emphasizes the selective and uneven affirmation and incorporation of subjects and ideas that were formerly categorically marginalized, particularly through invitation into reproductive respectability. It does so in order to suggest that racial, gendered, and sexualized violence and inequity are conditions of the past, rather than the foundations of contemporary neoliberalism’s exacerbation of premature death. Neoliberal ideologies hold out the promise of protection from premature death in exchange for complicity with this pretense. In Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider, Cherríe Moraga’s The Last Generation and Waiting in the Wings, Oscar Zeta Acosta’s The Revolt of the Cockroach People, Ana Castillo’s So Far from God, Gayl Jones’s Corregidora, Isaac Julien’s Looking for Langston, Inge Blackman’s B. D. Women, Rodney Evans’s Brother to Brother, and the work of the late Barbara Christian, Death beyond Disavowal finds the memories of death and precarity that neoliberal ideologies attempt to erase. Hong posits cultural production as a compelling rejoinder to neoliberalism’s violences. She situates women of color feminism, often dismissed as narrow or limited in its effect, as a potent diagnosis of and alternative to such violences. And she argues for the importance of women of color feminism to any critical engagement with contemporary neoliberalism.

It’s a love story plagued by outside interference from both family and friends. Indru is the young son of Punka, the rajah of Chutneypore. Despite his royal standing, Indru plans to marry a nautch dancer named Hollee Beebee. Indru is a high caste member and Hollee is not, making it difficult to wed. Indru takes a drastic measure to make he and Hollee are more compatible. Meanwhile, another member of the royal family resorts to lies and theft to secure his place as the rajah’s new heir. The Rajah of Chutneypore, also known as The Nautch Girl, is a classic tale of the haves and the have-nots. It’s a reminder that love always finds a way and good will always triumph over evil. Upon its initial release, the opera was based in England and performed more than 200 shows. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Rajah of Chutneypore is both modern and readable.

Book Captured Heritage

Download or read book Captured Heritage written by Douglas Cole and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heyday of anthropological collecting on the Northwest Coast took place between 1875 and the Great Depression. The scramble for skulls and skeletons, poles, canoes, baskets, feast bowls, and masks went on until it seemed that almost everything not nailed down or hidden was gone. The period of most intense collecting on the coast coincided with the growth of anthropological museums, which reflected the realization that time was running out and that civilization was pushing the indigenous people to the wall, destroying their material culture and even extinguishing the native stock itself.
