Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Prayers to the Dead Supply the need of scholars, as the book list at the beginning of this volume will show. There are also brief tracts to supply a cer tain sort of popular demand. My ambition has been to produce a book which should pre sent the essentials oi my subject, and at the same time so present them as to attract, not the clergy, but the laity. Such a book, I conceive, should be clear, brief, and not cum bered with technicalities. My humble posi tion is that of a popularizer, attempting to reach a public which is not much given to theological reading. We of the clergy are apt to blame the laity because they do not do as much theological reading as we think they ought, and then we do not take pains to provide them with books which they can read with ease and profit. Here is an at tempt in one department of theology whether success or failure time will show. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prayers for the Dead, for the Use of Members of the Church of England: With a Preface; To Which Are Added Meditations on the Four Last Things, With Instructions for Using Them, and Other Devotions A witness in support of this view is found in the prevalence amongst all nations, in the most ancient times, of the rites of burial. There is the same sort of evidence that the universal custom of primitive times was to bury their dead out of their sight, that there is of the original worship of one God. And this custom is as undoubted a note of belief in the resurrection of the flesh, burning the body or yet worse departures from primitive practice of infidelity. Peace be unto this consecrated spot that contains these remains. Amen. At a Brother's or Sister's Grave. May peace be thine, dear friend of my youth! What gentle memories and bitter regrets cluster around this tomb. Alas! death claimed thee too soon, and removed thee too early from those who loved thee. What grief! to think that we, whom one roof sheltered, one mother nourished, the same hearts cherished and the same hands blessed, are forever separated! We were so happy together; thy friendship was so sweet a support. Alas! thy departure has turned our joy into mourning. Nothing on earth is lasting. I grieve in my selfishness at having lost, thee; but thou art happy near our Heavenly Father, and this thought will inspire me with courage and resignation, as likewise the glorious hope of meeting thee again in a better world, where eternal joy awaits the righteous. O my God! grant unto my brother's (sister's) soul the happiness of the righteous; grant that, purified by death, he (she) may rejoice in the beatitude of Thy divine presence. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Month of the Dead: Or, Prompt and Easy Deliverance of the Souls in Purgatory The practice of the Month Of the Souls in Purgatory is spreading more and more. It bids fair to become as popular as that Of the Month of Mary. Its origin is very ancient, and, under a different form, we find it among the Jewish people, long before the Chris tian era. The proof Of this we find in religious journals of our period, and especially in the Opinion dz; a French paper. Some years ago, the Abbe Serre, director of an Archcon fraternity for the relief of the souls in Purgatory, established at Nimes, thus expressed himself in the above-men tioned journal. Download or read book In Paradise Or the State of the Faithful Dead written by Charles Hall Strong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Paradise; Or the State of the Faithful Dead: A Study From Scripture on Death and After-Death IN the exercise Of that sweetest Ofiice Of the Chris tian priesthood, the ministry Of sympathy and conso lation to the suffering, there are found in every parish these classes (1) Many Christian people who, in Spite Of the depth Of their trust and the sincerity Of their penitence, do yet tremble at the great mystery Of death; (2) Others who, for themselves and for their loved ones gone before, have not yet caught the clear horoscope of that future life, as drawn in the teaching of Christ and in the testimony Of the Church. TO give light upon this sweet and sacred subject, there are many large and learned volumes Of our best scholars, but these are too erudite to meet the Simple needs of everyday parochial life. It would seem that a little book which aims, in the simplest way, to gather up the Church' s teaching upon Death, Para dise, the Resurrection and Heaven, might find some useful, though humble, place. Book An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

Download or read book An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding written by David Hume and published by VM eBooks. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral philosophy, or the science of human nature, may be treated after two different manners; each of which has its peculiar merit, and may contribute to the entertainment, instruction, and reformation of mankind. The one considers man chiefly as born for action; and as influenced in his measures by taste and sentiment; pursuing one object, and avoiding another, according to the value which these objects seem to possess, and according to the light in which they present themselves. As virtue, of all objects, is allowed to be the most valuable, this species of philosophers paint her in the most amiable colours; borrowing all helps from poetry and eloquence, and treating their subject in an easy and obvious manner, and such as is best fitted to please the imagination, and engage the affections. They select the most striking observations and instances from common life; place opposite characters in a proper contrast; and alluring us into the paths of virtue by the views of glory and happiness, direct our steps in these paths by the soundest precepts and most illustrious examples. They make us feel the difference between vice and virtue; they excite and regulate our sentiments; and so they can but bend our hearts to the love of probity and true honour, they think, that they have fully attained the end of all their labours.
