In the ninth and tenth grades they have not enough linguistic experience and added grasp of mind to make the continuation of English grammar a profitable study. But if in the eleventh or twelfth grade (preferably in the latter) the student resume the study of the mother tongue, he will bring to it two or three years of scholastic discipline and experience beyond that of the eighth grade, and will be prepared to attack new and more dificult problems. Both works have however done good service to the language, in bringing order into and establishing it in its usage; and to them may be attributed much of the settled form it now wears in general acceptation. Yet they seem to have this great defect, - they are too syn thetical; they seem too much to treat of the use of language, as if it were derived from the principles of grammar and in pursuance of its forms, instead of treat ing of grammar as derived from the use of language, and merely embodying and arranging the forms and principles established by custom in the common employ ment of it. Hence these systems have too artificial a character, one too independent of the realities of the case, and too unconnected with them; so that they are studied without their real relation to language being properly perceived and, aided as this imperfection of the plan is by the defects above pointed out, it hence results, that much time is often wasted in the study of grammar without leading to a proper understanding of the language. When grammar, without more explanation, is defined to be the art of reading and writing a language with propriety, it is hardly to be wondered at, that it should be considered as something not essentially inherent in the use of the language and derived from it, but as something artificial fastened upon it, to guide and\ di rect it. If this definition be correct, grammar is, indeed, a very extensive subject, com prehending Ortho'e'py, Elocution, and Rhetoric, as well as Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Proso dy. The word, howeverydoes not seem to imply all this. It is derived from a Greek word, which sigui fies to write, and the grammarian, therefore, it would seem, has to do with written language only. And, should he succeed in teaching how to write the lan guage of which he treats, correctly, he will have ao complished all that his subject requires of him. This is all, at least, that has been attempted in the work now presented to the reader; and the, author is quite sensible, that, with the little time, talent, and patience that he could bring to bear upon the subject, if more had been attempted, less had been effected. To the scientific mind nothing affords more gratification than the analysis of any generality and, for the exercise of this power, neither Botany, Logic nor Chemistry affords a finer field than Grammar. The analysis of the sentence into its elements is most interesting. As; in the granulation of the diamond, ice] and spar or any other crystal; the grains and, in its pulverization, each particle of dust, invisible to the natural eye, are seen, under the microscope, to possess the same crystalline form as the original: so; in separating a com plex sentence into its elements, these into their elements, these into theirs and so on to the last and least word; each part is found to have the same things true of it, that are true of the original sentence.
