Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Greece: To Which Is Added, a Chronological Table of Contemporary History This history, since its first publication, has received many additions and improvements. For as I wrote each of my his tories some improvement suggested itself, which I then trans ferred to its predecessors when they came to a new edition. Of most of these an account will be found in the Preface to the Fourth Edition of my History of Rome. Here I shall only notice one improvement. The references to authorities in the first edition were rare; not that I was not fully aware of their great importance, but the necessity of keeping the book of a limited size in order that it might be sold at a moderate price, and an idea that those who would use it might care little about authorities, led me to neglect them except in some important cases. I was soon however induced to change my plan by receiving a letter from the late Dr. Arnold of Rugby, in which, when speaking of the work, he said, I lost no time in directing the introduction of your History into this school, where I think it will be found both agreeable and useful. In another edition I think that I would in your case put the authorities at the bottom of the page. Without them the book can only be aboy's book, with them it would be an admirable summary of Grecian history for any one. And I have found by experience in writing his tory, that I like to have the references even as a check upon my own accuracy. I think one is apt otherwise to write a little beyond the warrant of one's authority. But this is a matter of opinion on which many I dare say will differ. There can be no doubt, I think, as to the general merits of your book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Ancient Greece in Fifty Lives

Download or read book A History of Ancient Greece in Fifty Lives written by David Stuttard and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to tell the Greek story through the interconnecting lives of the men and women who shaped its politics and literature, its science and philosophy, its art and sport The political leaders, writers, artists, and philosophers of ancient Greece turned a small group of city states into a pan-Mediterranean civilization, whose legacy can be found everywhere today. But who were these people, what do we know of their lives, and how did they interact with one another? In this original new approach to telling the Greek story, David Stuttard weaves together the lives of the movers and shakers of the Greek world into a continuous narrative, from the early tyrant rulers Peisistratus and Polycrates, through the stirrings of democracy under Cleisthenes to the rise of Macedon under Philip II and Alexander the Great and the eventual decline of the Greek world as Rome rose. Moving from Sicily to Afghanistan, and from Macedonia to Alexandria; delving into the worlds of mathematics and geography, rhetoric and historiography, painting and sculpture; exploring the accounts of historians and mystics, poets and dramatists, political commentators and philosophers, this book creates a vivid picture of life in all arenas of the ancient Greek world. As well as the most famous politicians and writers, in these pages the reader will meet less well-known figures such as Milo, the Olympic wrestler who led his home town in a time of crisis; Aspasia, the brilliant female intellectual, who taught rhetoric to Socrates; and Epaminondas, the Theban who taught tactics to Philip of Macedon and so destroyed his own city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Outstanding individuals have the whole world as their memorial."--PericlesThe influence of ancient Greek civilization has been felt throughout modern Western history. Greek ideas can be found in the laws that govern our lives, the buildings in which we live, the books we read, and the vocabulary we use every day. Because these ideas have become so much a part of our daily life, we tend to forget that they originated more than 2,500 years ago.Ancient Greeks chronicles the lives and accomplishments of Greek figures whose influence continues to be felt today. We read about Greeks from all walks of life, including one of the greatest physicians who ever lived, the father of logic, and a brilliant mathematician who once said, "Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum strong enough, and I will single-handedly move the world." And move the world he did, but with his ideas, not a mighty fulcrum. In 42 essays, authors Rosalie and Charles Baker explore the lives of many personalities, from the most famous Greeks to people who are usually overlooked, including:Aesop, author of timeless fables that continue to provide lessons todayLycurgus, the legendary ruler of SpartaPlato, the great philosopher who established the Academy in AthensPhidippides, a courier and long-distance runner whose run from Marathon to Athens became the basis of the modern marathonSappho, one of the best female poets of classical antiquityHippocrates, one of the greatest physicians who ever livedAlcibiades, a patriot-turned-traitor who was exiled from GreeceIctinus, the architect responsible for the design of the ParthenonAristotle, the father of logic who tutored the teenage Alexander the GreatAlexander the Great, who ruled Greece, defeated the great Persian empire, conquered lands bordering the eastern Mediterranean Sea, including Egypt, and won control of lands stretching into India (and all that before his 33rd birthday)Zeno, founder of the philosophy known as StoicismThe biographies span the years 700 B.C. to 200 B.C., from Homer, the master of epic poetry and the author of the Iliad, to Eratosthenes, a brilliant mathematician who was the first to calculate the earth's circumference. A handy fact box that lists birth and death dates and the major accomplishments of each person profiled, abundant photographs and specially commissioned maps, a timeline, a glossary of Greek terms, an index of Greeks by profession, a pronunciation guide, and suggestions for further reading all add to the usefulness of this exceptional reference. With figures from fields as diverse as literature, mathematics, politics, the military, philosophy, and science, Ancient Greeks provides a comprehensive examination of the origins of modern civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Greece: To Which Is Added, a Chronological Table of Contemporary History The present work is intended to supply the want of a good History of Greece for schools. It claims, however, to be regarded as somewhat more than a mere school-book. The idea of a popular epitome, which I have sought to realize in it, is that, while by clear, animated, and graphic narrative it should interest the young, the views of society and of political measures and characters should be such as not to be disdained even by the statesman. In a country like this, where almost every one is called upon to take a part in politics, no species of knowledge is more indispensable than history. Under the guidance of sound sense, without which knowledge is of little avail, it is our surest protection against wild political theory, and enables us to think and act with confidence and security in public emergencies. Few, therefore, will deny that it is of importance that correct ideas on this subject should be instilled into the minds of youth, and that histories intended for their use should be something better than mere compilations. But the young are not alone to be considered; there is a very numerous class of grown persons who feel the want of sound historic knowledge, but have not time for reading voluminous works, and have a just contempt for the common school histories. Book Introducing the Ancient Greeks From Bronze Age Seafarers to Navigators of the Western Mind

Download or read book Introducing the Ancient Greeks From Bronze Age Seafarers to Navigators of the Western Mind written by Edith Hall and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wonderful…a thoughtful discussion of what made [the Greeks] so important, in their own time and in ours." —Natalie Haynes, Independent The ancient Greeks invented democracy, theater, rational science, and philosophy. They built the Parthenon and the Library of Alexandria. Yet this accomplished people never formed a single unified social or political identity. In Introducing the Ancient Greeks, acclaimed classics scholar Edith Hall offers a bold synthesis of the full 2,000 years of Hellenic history to show how the ancient Greeks were the right people, at the right time, to take up the baton of human progress. Hall portrays a uniquely rebellious, inquisitive, individualistic people whose ideas and creations continue to enthrall thinkers centuries after the Greek world was conquered by Rome. These are the Greeks as you’ve never seen them before.

Book The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece

Download or read book The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece written by Paul Cartledge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sumptuously illustrated in color and packed with information, The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece is now available for the first time in paperback. Offering fresh interpretations of classical Greek culture, the book devotes as much attention to social, economic and intellectual aspects as to politics and war. Paul Cartledge and his team of contributors ask what it was like for an ordinary person to partake in "the glory that was Greece." They examine the influences of the environment and economy; the experience of workers, soldiers, slaves, peasants and women; and the roles of myth and religion, art and culture, and science and education. This is a cultural history from the bottom up, which lays bare the far-reaching linguistic, literary, artistic and political legacy of ancient Greece, and seeks justification for Shelley's claim that "we are all Greeks." Paul Cartledge is Professor in Greek History in the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge and is Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Clare College, Cambridge. He is the author of several books about ancient Greece, including Spartan Reflections (California, 2001), Hellenistic and Roman Sparta (Routledge, 2001) and Sparta and Lakonia (Routledge, 2002).
