Book excerpt: Traditionally women were cornered in the four walls of house, serving the family and upbringing the children. Her innate talent was often unnoticed, as her abilities were never given a reasonable chance of display, in the organized set up of economic activities. She was always overburdened with domestic chores and unending family responsibilities. A woman turning into entrepreneur was considered as a taboo in the Indian society. In other words women were deprived of economic independence and social empowerment. Women are hard workers who have played a dynamic role in 'green revolution' by assisting counterparts in agriculture. The credit of 'white revolution' is crowned on women, who domesticated milking animals and offered subsistence to society. The two revolutions displayed engagement of crop farmers and milk farmers in traditional activities, for earning livelihood. Cooperative movement appreciated the labourious efforts of women. Self employment oriented entrepreneurial actions were boosted through the movement of microfinance. Literary experiences have disclosed that Self Help Group (SHGs) model has proved to be a success, to boost women entrepreneurship. This paper tries to explore the reasons of women turning entrepreneurs and the role of microfinance in assisting women to start micro enterprises. The paper also looks at the reasons of usage of borrowed funds from SHGs for other than business activity. The paper exclusively appraises the working mechanism of SHGs to support women entrepreneurs. The paper brings out the fact that young women are enthusiastic to be a part of SHG. Based on the level of education they carry out conventional and non-conventional business. Some women have borrowed money for servicing their consumption needs. In order to know the true usage of loan, SHGs are recommended to segregate the loan exclusively for business (productive) purpose and loans for unproductive purpose. Some of the members are found parsimonious who prefer savings mechanism through SHGs, here SHGs can differentiate this service from its core activity, of making women self employed.

Micro enterprises are an integral part of planned strategy for securing balanced development of the economy of the poor women. Rural women's participation in agro-based activities is much more than what statistics reveal. The study was conducted with the following specific objectives; to evaluate the role of self Help Groups in women entrepreneurship in Vellapatti village. To assess the perception of beneficiaries about the role of SHGs. To evaluate the working of the SHGs in Vellapatti village. The present study is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data have been collected by conducting a survey among 75 sample respondents from 9 Self Help Groups in different areas of Vellapatti village of Tuticorin town. Eight respondents were selected from each Self Help Group. Random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Percentage analysis, averages, chi square test and probability analysis were used. The data relates to the month of April 2012. The study reveals that 17.33 percent of the sample respondent's suggestions to improve the performance of SHGs are to provide more loans, whereas 60 percent and 22.67 percent of the sample respondents' suggestion is to provide loan at right time and to provide loan at lesser rate of interest. Microfinance has been one of the few effective tools for poverty reduction over the past years. Through the creation of self help groups, poor people can safely deposit money and accumulate funds for future investments or emergencies as well as access loans for productive purposes leading to higher incomes. Women are participating in all the productive activities and are at par with men. Government, banks and other financial institutions should come forward to offer loans for rural women, so that women entrepreneurs' movement in India will work on right direction to empower more and more women in social, economical, cultural and in political matters.

Book Doing Gender Doing Geography

Download or read book Doing Gender Doing Geography written by Saraswati Raju and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the 1970s gender had been invisible in analyses of social space and place in the androcentric discipline of geography. While recent contributions to feminist geography have challenged this, in India the engagement of geographers with gender, by being conservative in its choice of focus and orthodox in methodology, has been unable to destabilise the established disciplinary order. However, with younger scholars becoming increasingly interested in studying gender in geography, novel and innovative methods that include combinations of quantitative and qualitative analyses, visual sources and in-depth case studies are being tried out and accepted in geography despite its masculine legacy. This pioneering study brings together Indian geographers’ contributions to understanding gender, and through them, seeks to enrich the discipline of geography. It engages with the recent ‘spatial turn’ in the social sciences, which has reclaimed the explanatory power of space and place in social theory that had been nearly lost to deconstructive postmodernist scholarship. The volume draws entirely from the Indian scholarship, showcasing contextualised knowledge production, but hopes to initiate a a dialogue with scholars elsewhere working with feminist methodologies.

Book excerpt: The two case studies in this paper suggest that poor and low-income people strongly prefer private, fee-based health care to free public health-care services. The studies use household data from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and San Salvador, El Salvador. These data show how the demand for health care is shaped by price, convenience, quality of care, and the consumer's level of education. Important findings from household data compare the degree to which private care providers, public sector providers, and social security facilities are used. Also reviewed is the degree to which ineligible consumers exploit social security services. Policy recommendations for government officials discuss ways to deliver better health care to various economic groups.

Book excerpt: Improving learning evidence and outcomes for those most in need in developing countries is at the heart of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal on Education (SDG4). This timely volume brings together contributions on current empirical research and analysis of emerging trends that focus on improving the quality of education through better policy and practice, particularly for those who need improved 'learning at the bottom of the pyramid' (LBOP). This volume brings together academic research experts, government officials and field-based practitioners. National and global experts present multiple broad thematic papers – ranging from the effects of migration and improving teaching to the potential of educational technologies, and better metrics for understanding and financing education. In addition, local experts, practitioners and policymakers describe their own work on LBOP issues being undertaken in Kenya, India, Mexico and Ivory Coast. The contributors argue persuasively that learning equity is a moral imperative, but also one that will have educational, economic and social impacts. They further outline how achieving SDG4 will take renewed and persistent effort by stakeholders to use better measurement tools to promote learning achievement among poor and marginalized children. This volume builds on the second international conference on Learning at the Bottom of the Pyramid (LBOP2).* It will be an indispensable resource for policymakers, researchers and government thinktanks, and local experts, as well as any readers interested in the implementation of learning equity across the globe. *The first volume Learning at the Bottom of the Pyramid (LBOP1), may be obtained at: http://www.iiep.unesco.org/en/learning-bottom-pyramid-4608

Book Technological Innovation and International Competitiveness for Business Growth

Download or read book Technological Innovation and International Competitiveness for Business Growth written by João J. M. Ferreira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how companies combine technological innovation and competitive actions that create new opportunities for business growth in the international market. The complexity of designing today’s technology platforms requires profound knowledge in multiple areas. Technology development and commercialization as an ongoing competitive process involves enabling and inhibiting mechanisms, which govern the speed and acceleration of technological innovation. To compete more effectively, potential competitors are using coopetition and pooling their resources for shared gain in areas where they do not compete directly. Thus, a thorough examination of the current paradigms, theories, and frameworks is needed to increase our understanding of the technology-innovation-competitiveness linkages of business growth. This book brings together recent developments and methodological contributions within technological innovation, international competitiveness, and business growth that bridge the existing gaps and simultaneously advances the debate on this research topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Blurb: In this groundbreaking chronicle of the beginning of woman's emancipation Barbara Berg refutes the traditional interpretation that the women's movement emerged from the experiences of female abolitionists. Instead, she place the inception of feminism in the earliest years of the nineteenth century. Dr. Berg finds its roots in the complex responses to intricate social change that accompanied the urbanization of America, maintaining that the rise of the industrial city precipitated the subordination of women. Quietly tucked inside, the woman was expected to preserve the home as a haven of peacefulness and order-an artificial environment to compensate for the jarring world outside. Thus women fell victim to the "woman-belle ideal"--The monolithic creed that held women inferior, denying them access to the provinces of knowledge, responsibility, and dignity. Berg shows how women perceived and responded to this situation through an analysis of female invalidism, diaries, and works of fiction. In time, resigned listlessness gave way to an anguished search for identity, as women threw themselves into voluntary benevolent associations, activities that set the stage for a compelling feminist ideology. These activities took women outside the home, creating a context for the recognition of their oppression and helping them muster the spirit to elevate their self-image and, ultimately, their place in society. The effects of urban growth on the transformation of women's consciousness became evident through a study of the extant records of more than 150 female voluntary societies that flourished between 1800 and 1860. Newspaper accounts, municipal records, city guidebooks, and even popular songs reveal the gradual transformation of the ideas of women and men about themselves, each other, and their society. This book is the latest volume in The Urban Life in America series, edited by Richard C. Wade.

Book India Social Enterprise Landscape Report

Download or read book India Social Enterprise Landscape Report written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social enterprises hold the potential to make India's spectacular growth story work better for its poor citizens. India's rapidly growing economy has not managed to alleviate extreme poverty, which encompasses nearly half the country's population. Reasons for this situation include inadequate infrastructure, unreliable state delivery of affordable education and health services, and resource limitations. By employing innovative business models, social enterprises are addressing India's vast development needs in a sustainable manner using viable revenue models. More and more impact investors are entering India's social enterprise space with an interest in supporting businesses with triple bottom line returns---that is, profits (or at least financial sustainability), and social and environmental impact.
