This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An empirical method has been developed to predict the propulsive-induced forces on a V/STOL aircraft hovering in proximity of the ground. This method is applicable to configurations employing two, three, or four rectangular exhausts. Planform contour, nozzle pressure ratio, and lift improvement devices are considered. Accuracies on the order of one percent of propulsive thrust are demonstrated. (Author).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the In stitute has wnducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guid ance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his creative inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute. The International Symposium on Recent Advances in Aero dynamics and Aconstics was held at Stanford University, Stanford, California, U.S.A., August 22-26, 198:~. Thirty-five distinguished scientists were invited to present a comprehensive review on the fol lowing subject areas: unsteady aerodynamics, jets and shear layers, V /STOL aircraft aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and aerodynamics,.

Book The Effect of Ground Proximity on the Lateral Directional Aerodynamic and Control Characteristics of a Tilt Wing V STOL Aircraft at High Lift Coefficients

Download or read book The Effect of Ground Proximity on the Lateral Directional Aerodynamic and Control Characteristics of a Tilt Wing V STOL Aircraft at High Lift Coefficients written by H. C Curtiss (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of experiments was performed in the Princeton Dynamic Model Track to determine the lateral/directional stability and control of a V/STOL type aircraft in ground proximity. Of primary interest were the characteristics associated with flight at high lift coefficients and utilizing high wing incidences with large flap deflections as may be encountered during STOL operations in landings and take-offs where the full or maximum effects of ground proximity are encountered. The configurations tested included combinations of wing incidence and flap deflection up to a maximum of 60 degrees.

Book Effect of Ground Proximity on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Horizontal Attitude Jet Vertical Take Off and Landing Airplane Models

Download or read book Effect of Ground Proximity on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Horizontal Attitude Jet Vertical Take Off and Landing Airplane Models written by William A. Newsom (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been made to study the effect of ground proximity on the aerodynamic characteristics of two jet vertical-take-off-and-landing airplane models in which the fuselage remains in a horizontal attitude for the take-off and landing. The first model (called the tilt-wing model) had a tilting wing-engine assembly which was set at 90 deg incidence for the take-off and landing. The second model, called the deflected-jet model) had a cascade of retractable turning vanes to deflect the exhaust of the horizontally mounted jet engines downward for vertical take-off and landing while the entire model remained in a horizontal attitude. With the models at various heights above the ground in the take-off and landing configuration, the lift, drag, and pitching moment were measured and tuft surveys were made to determine the flow field caused by the jet exhaust. The tilt-wing model experienced a loss of lift of less than 3 percent near the ground. The deflected-jet model, however, suffered losses in lift as high as 45 percent near the ground because of a low pressure region under the model caused by the entrainment of air by the jet exhaust as it spread out along the ground. This loss in lift for the deflected-jet configuration could probably be reduced to less than 5 percent by the use of a longer landing gear and a high wing location.

Book Strut and Wall Interference on Jet induced Ground Effects of a STOVL Aircraft in Hover

Download or read book Strut and Wall Interference on Jet induced Ground Effects of a STOVL Aircraft in Hover written by Michael H. Kristy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small scale ground effect test rig was used to study the ground plane flow field generated by a STOVL aircraft in hover. The objective of the research was to support NASA-Ames Research Center planning for the Large Scale Powered Model (LSPM) test for the ARPA-sponsored ASTOVL program. Specifically, small scale oil flow visualization studies were conducted to make a relative assessment of the aerodynamic interference of a proposed strut configuration and a wall configuration on the ground plane stagnation line. A simplified flat plate model representative of a generic jet-powered STOVL aircraft was used to simulate the LSPM. Cold air jets were used to simulate both the lift fan and the twin rear engines. Nozzle Pressure Ratios were used that closely represented those used on the LSPM tests. The flow visualization data clearly identified a shift in the stagnation line location for both the strut and the wall configuration. Considering the experimental uncertainty, it was concluded that either the strut configuration or the wall configuration caused only a minor aerodynamic interference. Distribution.
