Book An Empirical Investigation of the Traditional and the Clean Surplus Valuation Models

Download or read book An Empirical Investigation of the Traditional and the Clean Surplus Valuation Models written by Stella N. Spilioti and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early theoretical work on equity valuation suggests that equity prices are determined by variables such as dividends and growth in dividends. However, these 'traditional' views have been challenged by recent studies that seem to indicate that equity prices are determined by book value and discounted future abnormal earnings. This paper employs panel data methodology and equity prices from Athens Stock Exchange empirically to compare the performance of the traditional and the more recent models of equity valuation. The results show that the performance of the Ohlosn (1995) model is quite similar to that of the traditional models even though in some cases Ohlson's model performance appears to be superior.

Book The Initial Performance of Ipos

Download or read book The Initial Performance of Ipos written by Dimitrios Gounopoulos and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pricing of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in the short-run has been analysed by several theoretical and empirical studies referring to the major international stock markets and seems to be a common characteristic in most international markets. Last decade this topic has been popular in Europe due to the increasing number of firms going public. This paper empirically analyses the initial performance of the Greek Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) to provide a market case of international evidence on performances of IPOs. The sample consists of 225 firms listed on the Athens Stock Exchange for the period January 1990 until December of 2001. This represents 79 percent of the IPOs listed during this period. The remaining 21 percent (59 IPOs from 284 in total) was not studied due to shortage of data. Our study shows that Greek IPOs are on average underpriced by 63.92% with 30 IPOs (13.3%) to be overpriced. The initial undepricing is 67.14% for industrial firms, 54.55% for finance firms and 56.19% for other firms. In terms of sub-sectors the highest return is obtained in Information Technology group while the lowest return is observed in Telecommunication Group. Results suggest that the IPO market on Greece is 'good' only for large offerings. Investigation of factors influencing the initial performance show that market condition, demand multiple, cold-hot issue periods, and offer price independence are significant determinants of underpricing.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of Greek equity mutual funds for the period 2012-2016, analyzing further selectivity and market timing ability, and short-term performance persistence for the period 2015-2016. Design/methodology/approach: Utilizing a survivorship bias controlled sample of 25 funds and daily data, the authors employ both single-index [Jensen (1968)] and multi-factor [Carhart (1997)] models to evaluate risk-adjusted returns using the General Index of Athens Stock Exchange as a benchmark. The Treynor-Mazuy (1966) and Henriksson-Merton (1981) models are used to assess the stock selection and market timing abilities of fund managers. In order to investigate short-term performance persistence, the authors implement a variety of parametric [Bollen & Busse (2005)] and non-parametric tests [Malkiel (1995), Brown & Goetzmann (1995), Kahn & Rudd (1995)].Finding: Results show that the funds under-performed the General Index, mainly due to the managers' market timing inability. Furthermore, weak evidence for short-term performance persistence has been documented.Research limitations/implications: Checking for performance persistence, it was impossible to rank funds and form deciles according to their estimated abnormal returns, as in Bollen & Busse (2005), due to the small number of mutual funds operating in Greece. Originality/value: Empirical studies regarding the performance of Greek equity mutual funds are still limited. Therefore, this paper intends to fill this gap by providing further evidence of performance evaluation.

Book Testing the Performance of Value Strategies in the Athens Stock Exchange

Download or read book Testing the Performance of Value Strategies in the Athens Stock Exchange written by George Diacogiannis and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines, for the first time consistently, the performance of contrarian (value) strategies in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) based on the price/earnings ratios, dividend yields, size (in terms of market value), market to book ratios, financial leverage ratios and the beta coefficient. We tested the validity of the aforementioned strategies, by examining the performance of portfolios of stocks formed on the basis of the above criteria, and by running a time series cross-sectional GLS multiple regression model. Our results showed that stocks having low price/earnings ratios, high dividend yields, small size, low market to book ratios, high market leverage and low betas generated significantly higher returns, which were achieved, with the exception of size variable, with no additional level of risk taken.
