Book Accounting discretion of banks during a financial crisis

Download or read book Accounting discretion of banks during a financial crisis written by Mr.Luc Laeven and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper shows that banks use accounting discretion to overstate the value of distressed assets. Banks' balance sheets overvalue real estate-related assets compared to the market value of these assets, especially during the U.S. mortgage crisis. Share prices of banks with large exposure to mortgage-backed securities also react favorably to recent changes in accounting rules that relax fair-value accounting, and these banks provision less for bad loans. Furthermore, distressed banks use discretion in the classification of mortgage-backed securities to inflate their books. Our results indicate that banks' balance sheets offer a distorted view of the financial health of the banks.

Book Understanding the Securitization of Subprime Mortgage Credit

Download or read book Understanding the Securitization of Subprime Mortgage Credit written by Adam B. Ashcraft and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an overview of the subprime mortgage securitization process and the seven key informational frictions that arise. Discusses the ways that market participants work to minimize these frictions and speculate on how this process broke down. Continues with a complete picture of the subprime borrower and the subprime loan, discussing both predatory borrowing and predatory lending. Presents the key structural features of a typical subprime securitization, documents how rating agencies assign credit ratings to mortgage-backed securities, and outlines how these agencies monitor the performance of mortgage pools over time. The authors draw upon the example of a mortgage pool securitized by New Century Financial during 2006. Illustrations.

Book Research Solutions to the Financial Problems of Depository Institutions

Download or read book Research Solutions to the Financial Problems of Depository Institutions written by J. Austin Murphy and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-08-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical analysis of the typical investments and funding sources of depository institutions. With a particular emphasis on mortgage-related investments (ARMs, CMOs, IOs, and POs), state-of-the-art valuation models are included that incorporate both call and default risk. Equity funding issues are also analyzed in detail. In addition, the author summarizes the history of the depository institution crisis, discusses the future outlook, and suggests a creative solution to the deposit insurance crisis that permits government deposit insurance without risk or cost to taxpayers. After proposing a system of private deposit insurance backed by minimal market-to-market collateral requirements, the author focuses on micro topics. In particular, the book includes a comprehensive evaluation of default risk data, precise equations for valuing complex mortgage securities, a theoretical model for making hedging and capital adequacy decisions (including an econometric model for estimating the return on the market portfolio and market risk premiums), and a practical discounted cash flow valuation model for analyzing depository institution stock (that incorporates financial statement items and footnotes as well as mortgage prepayments and the term structure of interest rates). The work represents an excellent handbook for financial institution executives, consultants, regulators, investors, and students.

Book Fixed Income Securities

Download or read book Fixed Income Securities written by Bruce Tuckman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fixed income practitioners need to understand the conceptual frameworks of their field; to master its quantitative tool-kit; and to be well-versed in its cash-flow and pricing conventions. Fixed Income Securities, Third Edition by Bruce Tuckman and Angel Serrat is designed to balance these three objectives. The book presents theory without unnecessary abstraction; quantitative techniques with a minimum of mathematics; and conventions at a useful level of detail. The book begins with an overview of global fixed income markets and continues with the fundamentals, namely, arbitrage pricing, interest rates, risk metrics, and term structure models to price contingent claims. Subsequent chapters cover individual markets and securities: repo, rate and bond forwards and futures, interest rate and basis swaps, credit markets, fixed income options, and mortgage-backed-securities. Fixed Income Securities, Third Edition is full of examples, applications, and case studies. Practically every quantitative concept is illustrated through real market data. This practice-oriented approach makes the book particularly useful for the working professional. This third edition is a considerable revision and expansion of the second. Most examples have been updated. The chapters on fixed income options and mortgage-backed securities have been considerably expanded to include a broader range of securities and valuation methodologies. Also, three new chapters have been added: the global overview of fixed income markets; a chapter on corporate bonds and credit default swaps; and a chapter on discounting with bases, which is the foundation for the relatively recent practice of discounting swap cash flows with curves based on money market rates.

  • ISBN : 1437928773
  • Pages : 53 pages

Download or read book Reducing Foreclosures written by Christopher Foote and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takes a skeptical look at a leading argument about what is causing the foreclosure crisis and what should be done to stop it. The authors focus on two key decisions: the borrower's choice to default on a mortgage and the lender's subsequent choice whether to renegotiate or modify the loan. Unaffordable loans, defined as those with high mortgage payments relative to income at origination, are unlikely to be the main reason that borrowers decide to default. The efficiency of foreclosure for investors is a more plausible explanation for the low number of modifications to date. Policies designed to reduce foreclosures should focus on ameliorating the effects of job loss rather than modifying loans to make them more affordable on a long-term basis. Illustrations.
