Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to explore the trends in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in Pakistan and to identify the key determinants of FDI for the period of 2000-2013. The country experienced a continuous surge in FDI inflows from 2000-2008. On the contrary, the phase of 2009-2013 has been characterized by a persistent decline in FDI in Pakistan. This slump is mainly attributed to political and economic instability as wells as poor law and order situation in the country. Keeping these periods with differing results in perspective, multiple regression analysis is employed to empirically analyze the key determinants that are expected to explain variation in FDI in Pakistan. The selected variables were found significant determinants of FDI in Pakistan. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), degree of trade openness and regime of dictatorship have a significant positive effect on FDI. While, terrorism attacks foreign debt, exchange rate, political instability, and domestic capital formation are negatively significant determinants of FDI inflows in Pakistan. Considering the dynamic changes in the broad macro factors in economy, this study provides a fresh perspective on the factors that determine FDI in Pakistan. Moreover, the study findings provide important insights to policy makers to design policy measures that enhance FDI inflows in Pakistan.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: FDI inflows play an important role in bringing growth and development to emerging economies. Pakistan is also heavily dependent on FDI inflows for achieving a high growth rate but the main obstacle being faced by Pakistan is increasing number of terrorist activities. Although there is a vast literature available which throws light on FDI lead economic growth relation based on terrorism but this study will surely add new dimensions to the ever increasing research on overseas investment in developing countries, specifically Muslim countries, by correlating religious sectarianism with FDI and economic growth. The present study analyses the effect of religious sectarianism on the relationship between FDI inflows and economic growth in Pakistan for the period of 1989-2016. For easuring sectarian terrorism, data of sectarian violence in Pakistan is taken for carrying out the empirical analysis. This study explores an empirical relationship by testing a two-way causality between FDI inflo

Book Foreign Direct Investment Inflows and Labor Productivity in Pakistan a Sector Wise Panel Cointegration Analysis

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment Inflows and Labor Productivity in Pakistan a Sector Wise Panel Cointegration Analysis written by Ayesha Serfraz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Developing economies tremendously benefit from FDI inflows since it leads to their economic growth. This study empirically analyzes the effects of sector-wise FDI inflows on respective sector-wise labor productivity for a panel of seven major sectors of Pakistan's economy covering time period of 1997-2016. In empirical analysis sector-wise FDI inflows has been used as an independent variable while sector-wise labor productivity is a dependent variable. Initialtests conclude that LSDV fixed effects model is the most appropriate test for the data being used for empirical analysis. Further tests confirm the existence of a long run Cointegration between these two variables. Wald test shows that a uni-directional short-run causality exists, running from sector-wise labor productivity to sector-wise FDI inflows. Pair-wise Granger-Causality test further shows that the effects of FDI inflows are not limited to one sector, rather there is an evidence of spillover effect from one sector to a

Book Trade And Investment In South Asia An Analysis

Download or read book Trade And Investment In South Asia An Analysis written by Choudhury Rahul Nath and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows started gaining traction in South Asia from the late 20th century onwards, when nations from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) began moving away from highly controlled regimes and adopting liberal and open economic policies. In the context of surplus labour and capital scarcity faced by South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, to varying degrees, the economic reform process has provided an opportunity to actively promote inward FDI flows, with the goal of providing the much-needed capital for the growth of this region. Several policy initiatives were undertaken to attract FDI and incentives were announced to fascinate investors, resulting in the inflow of FDI across the region. This book examines FDI inflows in SAARC nations in the light of regional policy changes in the 21st century. It investigates the relationship between trade and FDI in the region, and also provides insights into the ease of doing business in the SAARC region.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia written by Pravakar Sahoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Book FDI External Debt and Their Impact on Economic Growth of Pakistan

Download or read book FDI External Debt and Their Impact on Economic Growth of Pakistan written by Badar abbas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an important topic of debate in the economic circles nowadays. The project is expected to result in huge investments in Pakistan, but whether it will result in uplift of its economy is uncertain keeping in view the outcome of such ventures in the past. This study investigates the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and External Debt (ED) on the Economic Growth (EG) of Pakistan by using larger sample size that spans from 1970-2015. Besides the two explanatory variables (FDI & ED), three control variables (Repayments of External Debt, Net Official Development Assistance, and Exchange Rate) are included in the research model. The empirical analysis is conducted using Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model while Bounds test approach of co-integration is used to test the long run impact of these variables. The findings of this research highlights that FDI inflow in Pakistan has insignificant impact on its EG in the long run, however in the short run it has a significant and positive effect. Furthermore, no impact of ED on EG is observed in the long run, but a negative impact in the short run is noticed. This may imply that considerable attention is required to make this project a success.

Book Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Growth

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Growth written by Azam Muhammad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives of this research study were to know about the influence of various economic, social and political determinants of host country in enhancing FDI.Further, an attempt has been made to exploring the impacts of domestic investment, FDI, human capital and trade openness on economic growth. For analysis secondary data have been utilized over the time period from 1971 to 2005.Regression models have been used and the methods of Least Square, TSLS, and Generalized Method of Moment have been applied as analytical techniques for the empirical estimation. It has been argued that foreign capital inflow particularly in the form of FDI is likely to encourage national economic development in a host country by playing supportive role to local investment and by bringing many other benefits. Pakistan is a developing country and characterized by low per capita income, burden of external debt, lack of capital, low saving rate, rapid growth of population, and deficit in balance of payment etc. Domestic resources are short to finance the development needs of the country, therefore, FDI is one of the important sources of external finance for the economic growth and development of Pakistan.

Book Does Trade Cause Growth an Empirical Evidence from Pakistan

Download or read book Does Trade Cause Growth an Empirical Evidence from Pakistan written by Nazish Noor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this theoretical and empirical analysis is to re-investigate the relationship between trade and its consequent impact upon growth in a developing country like Pakistan. The variables in this study are used to understand the trends in the growth of economy of Pakistan. The results and interpretation of the analysis has been done, keeping in view the socio-political situations and their impact on the growth. The variables used in the study are exports, foreign direct investment(FDI) and a measure of trade openness while their impact upon the gross domestic product of economy has been analysed. The statistical technique used in the research is Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag approach. This technique would essentially help to understand the relationship between proxy variable of growth i.e. GDP and other variables of study without impact of lag difference at same level. In sum, the analytical framework would help establish the linkage between the variables representing trade like export, FDI and trade openness upon the growth of economy.

Book Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment Inflows and Covid 19 Pandemic in Pakistan

Download or read book Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment Inflows and Covid 19 Pandemic in Pakistan written by Ayesha Serfraz and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges for the world including the downfall in foreign direct investment inflows (FDI). Although there are many other factors which cause a decline in FDI inflows in Pakistan but present study mainly focuses on COVID-19 pandemic as this resulted in closures of borders causing a sharp decline in FDI inflows. For this purpose, this study uses monthly data of Pakistan, starting from January 2020 (start of COVID-19 in Pakistan) till May 2022 (time period in which study has been conducted) to empirically analyze the relationship between FDI inflows and COVID-19. The results of ADF test statistic show that data is integrated of order (1). Johansen Co-integration approach is used to determine the relationship. Taking FDI inflows as a dependent variable and COVID-19 cases as an independent variable, the results suggest a linear co-integration relationship between these two variables with FDI inflows having a negative sign indicating a negative relationship between FDI inflows and COVID-19 cases. This study is innovative in the sense that it concentrates on finding a proper empirical relationship between FDI inflows and COVID-19 and does not focus only in analyzing existing figures. Empirical results suggest that Pakistan must devise such policies that can be implemented immediately in such unforeseen conditions as more and new variants are coming to surface. The availability of data puts a limitation on application of empirical technique since COVID-19 started in 2020 in Pakistan and the pandemic is still not over. In coming years, a time series analysis would be possible to carry a long run investigation. The co-integration technique is the most useful at the moment as it not only mentions the relationship between the variables during pandemic but also makes a future forecast.

Book The Causal Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment and Current Account

Download or read book The Causal Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment and Current Account written by Danish Ahmed Siddiqui and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the relationship between FDI and current account (CA) in Pakistan using the Johansen-Juselius cointegration technique and the Granger causality test. The study results indicate that FDI and CA are cointegrated and thus exhibit a reliable long-run relationship. The Granger causality test findings indicate that the causality between FDI and CA is uni-directional. However, there is no short-run causality from FDI to CA and vice versa. Therefore, as a policy implication that FDI inflows may cause to the deterioration of the balance of payments, in the long run, it should be taken into account when policymakers decide to implement policies to attract foreign investors.

Book Spillover Effects of Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book Spillover Effects of Foreign Direct Investment written by ANM Moinul Islam and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation studies the possible R&D spillover effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on domestic firms. In particular, it studies how competition with foreign firms (or, multinational enterprises (MNEs)) can induce domestic firms to spend more on cost-reducing R&D, under two different scenarios. It examines this issue both theoretically and empirically. In the theoretical analysis, a cournot oligoplistic market structure is considered. Chapter 1 reviews the existing literature on spillover effects of Foreign Direct Investment. In chapter 2, a single domestic firm is considered. In chapter 3, free entry and exit of the domestic firms are considered whereas the number of foreign firms is still considered exogenous. Chapter 4 investigates the issue empirically, using cross country data for 72 countries for eight years. The overall findings are, the FDI generally increases R&D in a country and real rate of interest has negative association with the R&D.
