Book An Elevated Temperature Fatigue Crack Model for Stainless Steels

Download or read book An Elevated Temperature Fatigue Crack Model for Stainless Steels written by J-Y Guinemer and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model has been developed for the prediction of cyclic crack growth rates at different frequencies and has been verified for an austenitic stainless steel at elevated temperature. The model is based on the damage concept, and accounts for the viscoplastic behavior of stainless steels at elevated temperature. The inclusion of a creep component in such a model results in good correlation between the predicted and observed data.

Book Fatigue of Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Materials written by Subra Suresh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic and continuum aspects. The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids. Total life and damage-tolerant approaches are then introduced in metals, non-metals and composites followed by more advanced topics. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a problem set for each chapter, together with worked-out example problems and case studies. This will be an important reference for anyone studying fracture and fatigue in materials science and engineering, mechanical, civil, nuclear and aerospace engineering, and biomechanics.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature written by P. Shahinian and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resistance to fatigue crack growth of annealed stainless steels, Types 304, 316, 321, and 348, was determined at 77, 800, and 1100 F (25, 427, and 593 C). Crack growth rates were related to the stress intensity factor range (?K). With increase in temperature the rate of crack growth for a given (?K) increased. At room temperature the four steels had the same resistance to crack growth. However, at high temperatures crack growth became sensitive to the differences in composition and properties among the steels. At 1100 F (593 C), Type 348 steel had the greatest resistance to crack growth and Type 316 the lowest resistance. As a result, fatigue life was 3.4 times longer for Type 348 steel over Type 316 steel at this temperature. The characteristics of high-temperature fatigue crack growth were examined.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Types 304 and 308 Stainless Steel at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Types 304 and 308 Stainless Steel at Elevated Temperatures written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack-growth resistance of Type 304 stainless steel base metal and Type 308 stainless steel weld metal at 593°C (1100°F) was investigated. Specimens of both materials in the as-received (or as-welded) and thermally aged conditions were tested. The crack-growth rates were found to be exponentially related to the stress-intensity factor range, .delta. K. This relation, determined by regression analysis, was statistically appropriate and generally provided a good fit to the data. Confidence levels for new crack-growth rate observations were estimated, and comparisons of mean crack-growth rates were made. The results of the present investigation suggest the following conclusions: The fatigue crack-growth rates at 593°C (1100°F) in the Type 308 stainless steel metal are statistically lower than in the Type 304 stainless steel base metal in both the aged and as-welded (or as-received) conditions. Thermal aging at 593°C for 1000 h results in lower fatigue crack-growth rates in the base and weld metal tested at 593°C. Moreover, this difference in crack-growth rate was found to be greater than previously reported for lower-temperature tests. Load changes and hold periods at each crack-growth increment increase the scatter in results by a factor of approximately three.

Book Specimen Size Considerations in Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing

Download or read book Specimen Size Considerations in Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing written by LA. James and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of specimen size upon the fatigue crack growth rate behavior of annealed AISI Type 304 stainless steel was studied at two stress ratios at an elevated temperature. The resulting data were examined in the light of the present ASTM size criterion (based upon monotonic yield strength) and a proposed criterion based upon the material flow strength. The flow stress criterion is considerably less restrictive than the present ASTM criterion. The results of this study indicate that the flow stress criterion is entirely appropriate for strain-hardening materials such as austenitic stainless steels.

Book Automated Test Methods for Fatigue Crack Growth and Fracture Toughness Tests on Irradiated Stainless Steels at High Temperature

Download or read book Automated Test Methods for Fatigue Crack Growth and Fracture Toughness Tests on Irradiated Stainless Steels at High Temperature written by BAJ Schaap and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An automated system for fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness measurements has been developed for irradiated stainless steels tested at temperatures up to 925 K. The system, including a microcomputer, is based on the d-c potential-drop technique for crack extension measurements. Specimens of the compact-tension type are used for the experiments. A description is given of the potential-drop method and the automated data acquisition system. The method of collecting N-a data pairs is given as well as the calculation and analysis of the fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) and stress-intensity factor (?K). The measurement of load, deflection, and crack extension data to determine the J-versus-?a curves is also discussed.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Steel Alloys at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Steel Alloys at Elevated Temperatures written by HI. McHenry and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack propagation characteristics of three steel alloys were evaluated at room and elevated temperatures in an air environment. The alloys and temperature ranges were: A212-B (?YS = 40 ksi) 75 to 800 F, A517-F (?YS = 104 ksi) 75 to 950 F, and 9Ni-4Co-0.30C (?YS = 185 ksi) 75 to 650 F. The compact tension specimen was used for the 9Ni-4Co-0.30C and A517-F tests. A modified compact tension specimen having deep face notches in the crack plane was used for the A212-B tests. Fracture mechanics parameters were used to evaluate the crack propagation data. When plotted as a function of the stress intensity range, ?K, the crack growth rates increased with temperature in A517-F and A212-B; temperature did not influence the 9Ni-4Co-0.30C data. Tests at reduced cyclic frequencies were conducted on A517-F and 9Ni-4Co-0.30C steel. The crack growth rates increased as the frequency was reduced in A517-F at 500 and 950 F. In 9Ni-4Co-0.30C the growth rates at 500 and 650 F were essentially the same for cyclic frequencies of 10 and 0.002 Hz over the range of growth rates investigated.
