Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1762 and reissued in 1765, this work borrows heavily from previously published materials, including the works of Locke, Goldini, and especially John Weaver's 1712 An Essay towards a history of dancing. Gallini (1728-1805) presents a history of dance, arguments for learning the art of dance, and a discourse on the minuet. Especialy interesting are Gallini's comments on European and non-European dance, and discussion includes practices in Britain, Spain, Naples, the peasants of Tirol, Russia, Turkey, China, Africa, and the Americas.

Book A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Dancing

Download or read book A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Dancing written by James P. Cassidy and published by . This book was released on 1810 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first section of this manual is devoted to a history of dance with emphasis on Greek and Roman practices. However, much of this section is borrowed liberally from the writings of late eighteenth-century authors, and, while it illuminates the importance of Greek and Roman influence on the arts of the era, modern dance scholars will find many interpretive and factual errors. Book two is a discourse on what Cassidy considers the practical aspects of dance: steps, music, and deportment. There is also discussion on the minuet, reel, and country dances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Dancing: Its Theory and Practice The world of today needs stronger men and women - men and women who are 100 percent strong. We have just won the greatest war known in history, a war that was won by efficiency, and physical excellence. Realizing this to be a fact, let us ask ourselves if we are all in the proper condition physically? Are our schools properly preparing our sons and daughters for our daily battles? Are they getting 100 per cent exercises in our schools? The writer believes, that much good can be accomplished by our Dancing Masters teaching our children corrective exercises, and insisting that the public schools instruct the child in Nature Exercises and Esthetic Dancing. Teach the child how to prevent disease through proper exercises. We will then have no need for the doctor to cure the child after he is in the grip of a disease. Experience has taught the writer that most diseases can be cured through proper exercise. We now have seven children taking our health course, who have been pronounced incurable by the doctors. They have all shown wonderful improvement from the first lesson, and, through daily health exercises, have become strong and healthy. In China, we are told that the physician is hired to keep the family well, and in good health. Should a member of the family become ill, the physician's salary stops, until the person is cured. If this method were in vogue in this country, we believe our system of school gymnasium and the medical treatments now in use would undergo a radical change. It is the duty of every teacher to teach the children to be strong, healthy and perfect in body, to teach them how to preserve and to restore, and not to mutilate or destroy, our Creator's gift. The school child cannot have too much strength. Strength does not come in bottles or capsules; it can be had only through the careful practice of the proper exercises: exercises that will build up the entire system. Download or read book Choreographing Empathy written by Susan Foster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an urgently needed book – as the question of choreographing behavior enters into realms outside of the aesthetic domains of theatrical dance, Susan Foster writes a thoroughly compelling argument." – André Lepecki, New York University "May well prove to be one of Susan Foster’s most important works." – Ramsay Burt, De Montford University, UK What do we feel when we watch dancing? Do we "dance along" inwardly? Do we sense what the dancer’s body is feeling? Do we imagine what it might feel like to perform those same moves? If we do, how do these responses influence how we experience dancing and how we derive significance from it? Choreographing Empathy challenges the idea of a direct psychophysical connection between the body of a dancer and that of their observer. In this groundbreaking investigation, Susan Foster argues that the connection is in fact highly mediated and influenced by ever-changing sociocultural mores. Foster examines the relationships between three central components in the experience of watching a dance – the choreography, the kinesthetic sensations it puts forward, and the empathetic connection that it proposes to viewers. Tracing the changing definitions of choreography, kinesthesia, and empathy from the 1700s to the present day, she shows how the observation, study, and discussion of dance have changed over time. Understanding this development is key to understanding corporeality and its involvement in the body politic.

Book Choreographing Discourses

Download or read book Choreographing Discourses written by Mark Franko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choreographing Discourses brings together essays originally published by Mark Franko between 1996 and the contemporary moment. Assembling these essays from international, sometimes untranslated sources and curating their relationship to a rapidly changing field, this Reader offers an important resource in the dynamic scholarly fields of Dance and Performance Studies. What makes this volume especially appropriate for undergraduate and graduate teaching is its critical focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century dance artists and choreographers – among these, Oskar Schlemmer, Merce Cunningham, Kazuo Ohno, William Forsythe, Bill T. Jones, and Pina Bausch, some of the most high-profile European, American, and Japanese artists of the past century. The volume’s constellation of topics delves into controversies that are essential turning points in the field (notably, Still/Here and Paris is Burning), which illuminate the spine of the field while interlinking dance scholarship with performance theory, film, visual, and public art. The volume contains the first critical assessments of Franko’s contribution to the field by André Lepecki and Gay Morris, and an interview incorporating a biographical dimension to the development of Franko’s work and its relation to his dance and choreography. Ultimately, this Reader encourages a wide scope of conversation and engagement, opening up core questions in ethics, embodiment, and performativity.
