Book Of the Human Heart

Download or read book Of the Human Heart written by Edward R. Hogan and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Peirce was one of the principal contributors to nineteenth-century American science. He gained international prominence from his work on the perturbations of Neptune, and his Linear Associative Algebra was the first important mathematical research done by an American. He was a key figure in the professionalization of American science; and, as superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, he was an effective scientific administrator. Peirce also played an important role in the education of many American scientists, including Simon Newcomb, the most widely honored and recognized American scientist of the generation after Peirce, and Peirce's son. Charles Saunders. Peirce belonged to an impressive family of American intellectuals. The intellectual tradition in the family is apparent with Peirce's feminist mother, and his scholarly father, who wrote a history of Harvard College. The tradition finds its climax in Peirce's son, Charles, perhaps the most exceptional mind the United States has yet produced.

Book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy

Download or read book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy written by Joe Albree and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the rich collection of mathematical works located at the nation's first military school, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It outlines the relevant history of the Academy, discusses the mathematics department and curriculum, and describes the development of the library during the nineteenth century. A major part of this book is an annotated catalog of the more than 1300 works published between 1496 and 1915 found in the West Point library. Mathematics and its instruction greatly influenced the development of the Academy, the technological growth of America's army, and the standards of the military profession. These events, in turn, were crucial to the overall development of mathematics, mechanics, and engineering during the nineteenth century in the United States. Three individuals played a prominent role in this chronicle: Sylvanus Thayer, Charles Davies, and Albert Church. Listed are rare and historically valuable works in a broad range of mathematical subjects. The collection clearly shows the strong European influence on the early Academy. Also listed are numerous textbooks by West Point faculty and graduates; significant contributions were made by these writers to algebra, geometry, calculus, descriptive geometry, mechanics, surveying, and mathematics education. This book provides an important resource for the general audience as well as for those in pursuit of more scholarly information. It contains many interesting photographs and valuable details about the West Point collection. It is a must-have for anyone interested in mathematical books and collections.

Book Calculus Without Hocus Pocus

Download or read book Calculus Without Hocus Pocus written by K. Razi Naqvi and published by K. Razi Naqvi. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculus is a subject that needs to be studied many times over, ideally with a different book in each new round. Using Ezra Pound’s analogy (in ABC of Reading), we may think of the learner as an apprentice carpenter, and of calculus as a stool or table; the learner must keep going until the piece of furniture has three legs and will stand up, or four legs and won’t tip over too easily. Most people cannot follow this plan, because life is short and the list of other demands on their time just too long. This book has been written with a view to making calculus more interesting and intelligible to those who left college, recently or a long time ago, without becoming an adept; those who are familiar with the contents of undergraduate calculus, but not altogether content with their own grasp of the central concepts; those who are aware that the structure put together by them during their apprenticeship is too wobbly, and liable to tip over when the number of independent variables is increased from one to just two. An absurd simile? Not in the opinion of a distinguished mathematician and educator (quoted verbatim in the preface), who acknowledged that the customary definition of a differential in the theory of functions of a single variable breaks down when one extends it to functions of several variables and considers double integrals. He continued: “Students are rightly baffled when they attempt to convert such an integral to polar coordinates and are told that no longer is it permissible to [apply a straightforward extension of the relevant formula for a change of variable in a single integral]. The Jacobian must be used instead, and at this point the logical structure which was built so carefully collapses entirely. If we wish to make calculus an intellectually honest subject and not a collection of convenient tricks, it is time we made a fresh start.” Calculus Without Hocus Pocus aims to elucidate those (and only those) issues that are not treated adequately in standard textbooks. It offers more cogent explanations of the conundrums and paradoxes which have been nagging the minds of students and teachers of calculus for generations. The author, who has been using calculus as a teacher and researcher for over fifty years, has tried to produce a condensed and readable book that throws light from various directions upon the difficult parts of this very technical (and somewhat unpopular) subject; to show some of the reasons why calculus has been cast in the mould in which we find it; and to recommend some minor changes in notation and nomenclature that would remove nearly all of the hocus-pocus which almost every learner of calculus has had to endure so far.
