This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Algebra, for the Use of Students in High Schools and Colleges The author of this treatise has endeavored to prepare a work which should sufficiently exercise the ability of most learners, without becoming, at the same time, repulsive to them by being excessively abstract. Some writers err in expecting too much, and others err, in an equal degree, by requiring too little of the student. What success has attended an attempt to attain a proper medium it is left for competent teachers to decide. This work commences in the inductive manner, because that mode is most attractive to beginners. As the learner advances, and acquires strength to grapple with it, he meets with the more rigorous kind of demonstration. This course seems the most natural and effective. Induction is excellent in its place ; but when an attempt is made to carry it into all the departments of an exact science, the result often shows, that the main object of study was misapprehended. The young frequently fail to deduce clearly the general principle from the particular instances which have engaged their attention. Several parts of algebra, which are either omitted or not explained with sufficient distinctness in other works, have received particular attention in this. These parts treat of principles and operations, with which students rarely become familiar, but which are essential to a clear comprehension of the subject. Among these operations may be mentioned the separation of quantities into factors, finding the divisors of quantities, and the substitution of numbers in algebraic so mulæ. The most important sources that have been drawn upon in the preparation of the new chapters are Professor Chrystal's text-boole of Algebra and Mr. Smith's own larger book, the Treatise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Algebra The following work is designed for the use of the higher classes of Schools and the junior students in the Universities. Although the book is complete in itself, in the sense that it begins at the beginning, it is expected that students who use it will have previously read some more elementary work on Algebra: the simpler parts of the subject are therefore treated somewhat briefly. I have ventured to make one important change from the usual order adopted in English text-books on Algebra, namely by considering some of the tests of the conver geney of infinite series before making any use of such series: this change will, I feel sure, be generally approved. The order in which the different chapters of the book may be read is, however, to a great extent optional. Book An Elementary Treatise on Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Algebra Classic Reprint written by B. Bridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Algebra This small compendium embraces all which is comprised in the former large and expensive editions, that is either practically useful or theoretically valuable. By introducing Equations and Problems at the earliest stage possible, a novel and instructive feature - which the editor is persuaded cannot fail to excite the curiosity and stimu late the ardour of the young algebraist, so as t0'induce him to pursue his studies with more than usual alacrity, intelligence, and success - has been given to the work. A great variety of new, easy, and interesting problems, which are not contained in former editions, have thus been interspersed through the several chapters. Besides these additions many alterations have been made, either for the sake of uniformity of arrangement, or of rendering the subject still more easy and accessible to youthful minds. Mr. Bridge, nearly forty years ago, was not without a hope that his Elemen tary Treatise on Algebra, ' would find its way into our Public Schools where, it was very well known, this branch of education was [then] but little attended to and it is now confidently hoped, that this new edition will (in consequence of its cheap and improved form) find its way into many schools, where this science is not yet sufficiently attended to. And thus be the means of rendering this instructive study a subject of general education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
