Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Of the fluid, bu sometimes it passes off in the form of a gas, as ammonia, etc. Precipitation is often accelerated by heating the fluid, or by agitation. The precipitate is separated from the fluid by filtration. A disk of unsized paper is folded into a conical form, and placed in a funnel supported on a stand. The paper is first moistened with a little distilled water, and the mix ture poured upon it the clear fluid passes into the ves sel set below, while the precipitate remains on the paper. To free the precipitate from all soluble impurities, it is washed by pouring distilled water over it, until a drop from the point of the funnel leaves no residue upon pla tinum foil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by Frank Clowes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis The text-book on Qualitative Analysis, written by one of us, has proved by its success that it meets the requirements of large numbers of teachers and students. It furnishes a fairly complete course of work for a student who intends to make a study of Qualitative Analysis. We have long felt, however, that a smaller treatise would be useful to students of elementary practical chemistry and chemical analysis, who have the opportunity of working in a suitably equipped laboratory and under the direction of a teacher. The course of instruction in this book is adapted to those students who do not need so thorough a chemical training as that which must be undertaken by the future professional and analytical chemist. This smaller book is therefore intended for the general students and the technical students of our schools and colleges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemical Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative The consequence of this method is the stereotyped product so painfully familiar to all who are engaged in teaching or examining, namely, a certain number of regulation tests, arranged with a semblance of method in the everlasting three columns, headed Experiment, Observation, Inference, followed by a more or less slovenly copy of the time-honoured tables. The valuelessness of such a written-out record must be patent to all teachers, and yet we still continue to accept it in lieu of a few real notes, less quickly and easily examined no doubt, because less stereotyped, but of infinitely more value to the student himself. Book A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Classic Reprint written by Theodore J. Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further. Book Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by G. C. Caldwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis In this work the author has brought together what has already been published, separately, in the Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, by himself and Dr. S. M. Babcock, and the Notes on Chemical Analysis, by himself alone; he has added thereto much matter on qualitative analysis, all of Parts III and IV on quantitative analysis, and nearly all of Part V. Of course no such work as this can be satisfactorily prepared without frequent reference to the standard treatises of Prescott and Johnson, and of Fresenius, in one of which the whole subject of qualitative analysis is very thoroughly treated, and in the other both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author would acknowledge his indebtedness to these works, while claiming for himself at least some novelty in the arrange ment of the matter, as well as in some of the matter itself, in this attempt to prepare a book that is much needed in his own laboratory. Also, for valuable suggestions in the revision of the work for this edition, he is indebted to Professor Dennis, and Instructors Chamot and Smith, of the University. Certain modifications in the spelling of chemical terms, adopted, after very careful consideration, by the Chemical Sec tion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are used in this book. Book A System of Instruction in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Instruction in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Arthur H. Elliott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Instruction in Qualitative Chemical Analysis IN the preparation of this little manual, the first and main object sought to be attained, was to produce a handbook to be used with the living teacher. From an experience covering twenty years, a large part of which has been spent in the in struction of students in the laboratory, the author has found that chemical manipulation cannot be acquired by the reading of directions in a book alone. Students that are given instruction by means of lectures and with such experimental demonstrations as are performed by the lecturer at that time, are usually incapable of repeating the experiments which they have seen when they are placed in a laboratory. Again, the lecturer giving the instruction does not have the opportunity to give the student that personal attention which the importance of the subject requires. It is usually some assistant who has to show the individual student those points that insure success in the work to be accomplished. Keep accurate and methodical records of all experiments performed. These records should be made during or immediately following the performance of the experiment, and not transferred or erased afterwards. Original notes of an unsuccessful experiment are more valuable than a well-written description of a successful experiment, if the latter is composed in the absence of the experiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: A Manual for the Use of Students of Chemistry in Schools and Colleges The purpose of the authors has been to prepare a work on qualitative analysis that shall be both exact and compendious, avoiding on the one hand the diffuseness of the larger treatises and on the other the incompleteness of the smaller manuals. Full statement has been made of the behavior of the bases toward certain reagents, but extraneous details have been omitted. Under the headings Methods of Analysis explicit directions have been given for the separation and detection of the elements, and these directions are followed in every case by a full discussion of the reasons for the different steps and of the difficulties that may arise in the course of analysis. It is hoped that this method of presentation, together with the occasional references to such articles in chemical journals as deal with debated points or new methods, may serve to arouse the interest of the student and to discourage on his part a blind and mechanical style of work that is so common in courses in qualitative analysis and is so greatly to be deplored. The Introduction discusses in considerable detail the principles and operations involved in qualitative analysis, but it does not include the consideration of the dissociation theory.
