Book ELEMENTARY LOGIC REV ED P

Download or read book ELEMENTARY LOGIC REV ED P written by W. V. QUINE and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now much revised since its first appearance in 1941, this book, despite its brevity, is notable for its scope and rigor. It provides a single strand of simple techniques for the central business of modern logic. Basic formal concepts are explained, the paraphrasing of words into symbols is treated at some length, and a testing procedure is given for truth-function logic along with a complete proof procedure for the logic of quantifiers. Fully one third of this revised edition is new, and presents a nearly complete turnover in crucial techniques of testing and proving, some change of notation, and some updating of terminology. The study is intended primarily as a convenient encapsulation of minimum essentials, but concludes by giving brief glimpses of further matters.

Book An Elementary Handbook of Logic

Download or read book An Elementary Handbook of Logic written by John Joseph Toohey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Handbook of Logic The present volume makes no pretensions to being anything more than is implied in its title. It is elementary, and it is a handbook. Being elementary, it omits all the subtler questions which frequently find a place in extended treatises on Logic. Being a handbook, it is not designed for private study, but for use in the classroom. It does not attempt to provide a detailed explanation of the various topics as they come up for study. This has been left to the teacher, whose exposition of the doctrine would probably be embarrassed and rendered less effective if his pupils were confronted with long and unnecessary comments in the text. A special effort has been made to combine clearness with brevity, so that once the student has received the teacher's explanation, he may have a lucid epitome which will enable him to recall with facility all the essential principles of Logic. The volume departs in two particulars from the common method of treatment. First, a distinction has been drawn between the Act of Inference and the Process of Inference, and a separate chapter has been devoted to each. This will probably be found to simplify the explanation of Reasoning and to bring out the essential identity of form which underlies the various types of argument. Secondly, the hypothesis of the Distribution of the Predicate has been abandoned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966. This is a self-instructional course intended for first-year university students who have not had previous acquaintance with Logic. Book Elementary Symbolic Logic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a serious study of the fundamentals of symbolic logic that will neither frustrate nor bore the reader. The emphasis is on developing the students grasp of standard techniques and concepts rather than on achieving a high degree of sophistication. Coverage embraces all of the standard topics in sentential and quantificational logic, including multiple quantification, relations, and identity. Semantic and deductive topics are carefully distinguished, and appendices include an optional discussion of metatheory for sentential logic and truth trees.

Book An Introduction to Formal Logic

Download or read book An Introduction to Formal Logic written by Peter Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal logic provides us with a powerful set of techniques for criticizing some arguments and showing others to be valid. These techniques are relevant to all of us with an interest in being skilful and accurate reasoners. In this highly accessible book, Peter Smith presents a guide to the fundamental aims and basic elements of formal logic. He introduces the reader to the languages of propositional and predicate logic, and then develops formal systems for evaluating arguments translated into these languages, concentrating on the easily comprehensible 'tree' method. His discussion is richly illustrated with worked examples and exercises. A distinctive feature is that, alongside the formal work, there is illuminating philosophical commentary. This book will make an ideal text for a first logic course, and will provide a firm basis for further work in formal and philosophical logic.

Download or read book Book of Proof written by Richard H. Hammack and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the language and standard proof methods of mathematics. It is a bridge from the computational courses (such as calculus or differential equations) that students typically encounter in their first year of college to a more abstract outlook. It lays a foundation for more theoretical courses such as topology, analysis and abstract algebra. Although it may be more meaningful to the student who has had some calculus, there is really no prerequisite other than a measure of mathematical maturity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present text book is intended as an introduction to elementary logic. Its content, structure, and manner have been determined in large measure - perhaps 'caused' is the better word- by certain desiderata about which the reader should be informed at the outset. The leading idea is that even an introductory treatment of logic may profitably be fashioned around a rigorous framework.

Book excerpt: Modern Logic fills the strong need for a highly accessible, carefully structured introductory text in symbolic logic. The natural deduction system Forbes uses will be easy for students to understand, and the material is carefully structured, with graded exercises at the end of each section, selected answers to which are provided at the back of the book. The book's emphasis is on giving the student a thorough understanding of the concepts rather than just a facilitywith formal procedures.
