Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Whitefield was the greatest evangelist of the 18th century in America and was a major contributor to the Great Awakening. Whitefield criss-crossed the countryside of Colonial America boldly preaching the message of salvation. Crowds packed the churches and outdoor venues whenever Whitefield appeared, bubbling over with eager anticipation to hear his great oration. His preaching was described as bold, purely gospel, and blazing with an intensity of evangelistic passion. His voice was so powerful that 30,000 people could hear him at once, and yet still so musical and sweetly toned that he could, by the grace of God, bring hardened men to tears of repentance. In, The Method of Grace, a classic of revival preaching, Whitefield shows the way God has provided for a person to receive true, lasting peace for his soul. See how this great preacher of the Great Awakening brought the Gospel into intimate connection with people's hearts and not just their heads. For those who preach the Gospel it will have a profound impact on how you preach the message of peace.

Book A Sermon on Regeneration

Download or read book A Sermon on Regeneration written by George Whitefield and published by Curiosmith. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whitefield explores the doctrine of genuine regeneration and how little it is understood. He warns that "nothing short of a thorough sound conversion will fit thee for the kingdom of heaven." What does it mean to be in Christ and to be a new creature? He explains the reasoning why this must be the case. He explains what practical effects this has in life. "Let each of us therefore seriously put this question to our hearts: Have we received the Holy Ghost since we believed? Are we new creatures in Christ, or no?"

Book Labyrinth of Digressions

Download or read book Labyrinth of Digressions written by René Bosch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their appearance during the 1760s, the five instalments of Laurence Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman caused something like a booksellers’ hype. Small publishers and anonymous imitators seized on Sterne’s success by bringing out great numbers of spurious new volumes, critical or ironic pamphlets, and works that in style and title express a congeniality with Tristram Shandy. This study explores these eighteenth-century imitations as indicators of contemporary assumptions about Sterne’s intentions. Comparisons between the original, the first reactions, and a number of late eighteenth-century imitations, show that Tristram Shandy was initially read against the background of Augustan and Grub-street satire. The earliest imitators harked back to traditions of banter and folklore, bawdy and grotesque humour, pathetic stories and orthodox religiosity, reaffirming a pattern of moral and aesthetic values that was conservative for its time. Philosophical Sentimentalism appears to have been a late development. It is also argued that, partly because of their bad reputation, some of the authors of forgeries and parodies had a greater influence on the original than the reviewers to whom Sterne is often said to have listened. The imitators followed leads and themes in the first instalments, developing them according to their own conception of Sterne’s project and the reasons for his success. As a consequence, they unintentially put a pressure on Sterne to alter his course, and even to abandon some of the narrative lines and themes he had set out for himself. The literature section contains a chronological checklist of English eighteenth-century Sterneana.

Book The Life and Work of James Ward R A 1769 1859

Download or read book The Life and Work of James Ward R A 1769 1859 written by Oliver Beckett and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually ignored for a century, the painting of James Ward are at last being re-evaluated, and we are again discovering the charm and skill of one of Britain's foremost animal painters. From a harsh boyhood spent among the crowded tenements and Thames-side wharves of George III's London, Ward became first an engraver of the highest rank and then a painter and Royal Academician with a thriving practice among the aristocracy. Although tending to specialize in horses, prize livestock and other animals, Ward was a notable landscape and portrait painter, and his draughtsmanship was superb. Perhaps best know for his large romantic version of Gordale Scar, in the Tate Gallery, his work also included a vast allegorical painting of the Triumph of Waterloo, ill-received by the public, and since lost. This well-researched biography brings Ward's whole oeuvre into the context of his long life and brings a new dimension to our view of this neglected yet highly talented artist.-- Publisher description.
