Book excerpt: Asymmetrical gait has been associated with various musculoskeletal and neurological diseases and often leads to further health concerns. Asymmetrical gait is typically the result of a decrease in the strength of interlimb coordination and synchronization to external cues. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a vertically oscillating treadmill on gait asymmetry induced by: 1) adding a unilateral mass; and 2) restricting ankle joint plantarflexion. It was hypothesized that walking on the vertically oscillating treadmill would reduce gait asymmetry and measures of phase coordination between limbs. Twenty-five participants (12 males and 13 females) performed a total of six walking trials (3 asymmetry conditions during 2 treadmill conditions) in random order. The three asymmetry conditions included: 1) normal walking; 2) walking with a unilateral ankle weight; and 3) walking with a unilateral ankle brace. Each condition was performed while participants walked on a stationary treadmill and a second time while the treadmill vertically oscillated. Book excerpt: Physical rehabilitation for walking recovery after spinal cord injury is undergoing a paradigm shift. Therapy historically has focused on compensation for sensorimotor deficits after SCI using wheelchairs and bracing to achieve mobility. With locomotor training, the aim is to promote recovery via activation of the neuromuscular system below the level of the lesion. What basic scientists have shown us as the potential of the nervous system for plasticity, to learn, even after injury is being translated into a rehabilitation strategy by taking advantage of the intrinsic biology of the central nervous system. While spinal cord injury from basic and clinical perspectives was the gateway for developing locomotor training, its application has been extended to other populations with neurologic dysfunction resulting in loss of walking or walking disability.
