While this simple model does not contain enough realistic features of the atmosphere to predict the synoptic-scale weather with accuracy, it does, however, simulate the planetary waves of the atmosphere with sufficient realism to enable us to conduct numerical experiments designed to study specific problems in numerical weather prediction. In this interim report, we shall give a brief discussion of the motivations for developing such a global barotropic model, describe in some detail the numerics for the solution of the model equations, and present some sample numerical time-integration results. Several remarks concerning the numerics of this algorithm are also included. (Author).

Book excerpt: Numerical experiments have been designed to study the suitability of certain numerical methods commonly used in the numerical modeling of the atmosphere. Specifically, we conducted experiments to address the following: (1) What effect does a Shapiro-type filter have on the results of a numerical time-integration? (2) What are the capabilities and limitations of numerical approximations such as second-order finite-difference approximations in numerical time-integrations? The Shapiro filter is found to be very effective in the removal of computation noise and is therefore useful for insuring computational stability in a long-term time-integration. For dynamically stable flows, numerical errors due to truncation and round-off are amplified by the dynamics of the stable system. Numerical methods such as second order finite-difference approximations, together with a Shapiro-type filter, are adequate in yielding approximate solutions to the modeling differential equations. For dynamically unstable flows, numerical errors are amplified as part of the dynamics of the unstable system. The use of finite-difference approximations may yield solutions which bear no resemblance whatsoever to the true solution of the differential equations. It is postulated that interactions among long wave computational modes and physical modes in a numerical model may prove to be another major obstacle in the numerical prediction of an unstable flow. Book excerpt: Although methods of filtering have been developed for representing on a planar surface the sub-grid scale process of diffusion in numerical modeling of the atmosphere, the proper form of filtering for a spherical domain remains to be selected. In this study, the characteristics of several different forms of a highly scale dependent low pass filter are examined and compared for the case where the filter is applied to a scalar field on the surface of a sphere. The phase and amplitude response functions of the various forms of the filter indicate that the simplest form, although it does not preserve area-weighted mean values, approaches most closely the criteria established for the ideal filter. This indication is verified by the test computations in which each form of the filter is applied up to 10,000 times to a noisy scalar field. (Author).

On the other hand, the book also deals with the numerical methods for applying bifurcation analysis on large dimensional dynamical systems, with thousands or more degrees of freedom, which arise through discretization of ocean models. The novel approach in understanding the phenomena of climate variability is through a systematic analysis within a hierarchy of models using these techniques. In this way, a nice overview is obtained of the relations between the results of the different models within the hierarchy. Mechanistic description of the physics of the results is provided and, where possible, links with results of state-of-the-art models and observations are sought. The reader is expected to have a background in basic incompressible fluid dynamics and applied mathematics, although the level of the text is mixed and sometimes quite introductory. Each chapter is rather self-contained and many details of derivations are provided. The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in meteorology, oceanography, and related fields who are interested in tackling fundamental problems in dynamical oceanography and climate dynamics.
