Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Milic Lochman is internationally respected as a convincing and powerful interpreter of theology for both Christians and Marxists. With this work he offers a contemporary and ecumenical statement of what Christians believe, based on the Apostles' Creed. He treats the creed not as an archaic document, but as a living witness, vitally relevant to today's intellectual and ecumenical scene. This existentially committed exposition of the basics of Christian faith will inform and challenge both clergy and laity - Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox - as few have done since the majestic 'Credo' of Karl Barth.

Book Confessing the One Faith Revised Edition

Download or read book Confessing the One Faith Revised Edition written by Theodore Gill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visible unity means that churches recognize in one another a witness to the fullness of the apostolic faith which they profess. Will Christians be able one day to declare together before the world, in common confession and praise, their faith in who God is and what God has done? This text-growing out of many years of study and consultation, involving theologians from various Christian traditions and from all parts of the world-is a unique instrument for drawing the churches toward such a common confession. As a contemporary explication of the creed that emerged from the ecumenical councils of Nicea (325) and Constantinople (381) and is used in both Eastern and Western Christian liturgies, Confessing the One Faith relates the subject matter of those ancient affirmations to the challenges of today's world-in which the language and philosophy of the fourth century sound alien to many, and the basic affirmations of the Christian faith are widely questioned. This new edition includes an introduction written by Dame Mary Tanner, a president of the World Council of Churches.

Book Keeping Faith

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-03-01
  • ISBN : 1621894169

Download or read book Keeping Faith written by D. Stephen Long and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping Faith offers resources to help Christians reclaim the importance of doctrine and thereby know and love well God and God's creation. Although it gives particular attention to the Wesleyan and Methodist tradition, it is of necessity an ecumenical effort. Neither the Wesleyans nor the Methodists invented Christian doctrine. In fact, the Wesleyan tradition contributes little that is distinctive or unique. This is a good thing, for unlike other disciplines where originality and uniqueness matter greatly, Christian doctrine depends on others and not the genius of some individual. Chesterton once said that Christianity is the democracy of the dead. In other words, doctrine depends on the communion of the saints. They help us speak of God as we should. We need to hear their voice. For this reason, this work is an ecumenical commentary on the Confession of Faith and Articles of Religion found in the Wesleyan tradition that also draws on ancient and modern witnesses to God's glory. It is ecumenical because it brings these doctrines into conversation with the broader Christian tradition. Doctrine unites us in a "communion," which is greater than any single denomination and makes us what we otherwise cannot be: one, holy, catholic and apostolic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief, accessible invitation to the historic creeds and confessions makes a biblical and historical case for their necessity and shows why they are essential for Christian faith and practice today. J. V. Fesko, a leading Reformed theologian with a broad readership in the academy and the church, demonstrates that creeds are not just any human documents but biblically commended resources for the well-being of the church, as long as they remain subordinate to biblical authority. He also explains how the current skepticism and even hostility toward creeds and confessions came about.
