Book excerpt: It is feasible to drill a hole to a depth of 50,000 feet by utilizing conventional rotary drilling equipment and techniques. Existing equipment is capable of drilling the hole but modifications of some equipment items are warranted for completion of the lower portion of the hole. The whole could be started with presently available equipment as soon as funds are available, a location established, and a contractor selected. While the upper portion of the hole (20,000 - 30,000 ft.) is being drilled, equipment modifications could be made and supplemental equipment developed. This would allow time to make the equipment available when needed for the lower portion of the hole. Two locations are considered as established by the criteria, both in the Coast Ranges Province of California in the vicinity of the San Andreas Fault. One location would be in an area where granitic rock outcrops at the surface while the other would be in an area where the granitic is overlain by 10,000 feet of sediments. The estimated time to drill the hole under ideal conditions at either location is 4-3/4 years at an estimated cost of $20,000,000. [$400/ft].

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Analysis of a preliminary design for a hybrid ERODRILL system indicates that the system is practicable for both fabrication and operation in the field. The system as designed is compatible with standard 3-inch i.d., 41/2-inch o.d. drilling pipe and rotary drill bits. Very little additional wellhead equipment will be required in field use. Dynamic loading on the downhole system with this concept is negligible; the upward thrust on the drill stem is only about 6,000 pounds per pulse while the downward force on the drill stem during drilling is 30,000 pounds. Both safety and reliability analyses have been performed which show the hybrid ERODRILL concept to be at least equivalently safe and reliable as standard drilling methods. Preliminary economic analysis shows that with current assumptions, ERODRILL is extremely attractive for offshore drilling operations, and possibly within competitive reach for deep (20,000 feet) land wells. The hybrid concept does not at first blush appear economical for shallow (10,000 feet) land wells. These conclusions are based upon assumptions about system performance, which, while they were based on the best available evidence, may be incorrect by as much as /sup +/- a factor of 2.
