Section III contains the estimates of potential Free-World traffic available to the SST's. In Section IV, estimates of the direct operating costs of the various aircraft concepts are developed and compared. Section V provides a comparative analysis of the profitability potential of alternative SST concepts. In Section VI, the SST traffic potential is translated into estimates of the Free-World market for the SST in general and for U.S.-built SST's in particular in the light of the cost and profitability findings. Section VII, the final section, is an assessment of possible requirements for government support of a U.S. SST program and of the forms in which such support might be made available. Appendixes A and B provide additional background information on the aircraft market analysis and the direct operating cost analysis, respectively. Appendix C is a summarization of the findings of the Air Passenger Survey conducted by the Institute. (Author).

All references to classified or proprietary data in the original report have been removed. The economic study was undertaken to fulfill three principal objectives: (1) To perform a comparative economic analysis of reciprocating, high speed subsonic turbine and supersonic (as presently conceived in the 1960-1970 time period) transport aircraft both in the military system and in commercial airline operations. (2) To provide a preliminary analysis of the value of speed to the military logistics system. (3) To provide a preliminary forecast as to the potential demand for supersonic transports in the domestic and world-wide commercial markets. In order to perform the comparative economic analysis (objective I), it was necessary to develop a cost methodology for estimating direct and indirect operating costs of reciprocating, high speed subsonic turbine and supersonic transport aircraft both in the military system and in commercial airline operation. Thus, a fourth objective was accomplished and a military and commercial cost estimating methodology was provided to assist in evaluating transport aircraft. (Author).

Improved technology levels, optimization of size, speed, and range have produced an airplane with economics equal to or better than the 707-320B. Passenger preference for the reduced trip times and improved scheduling will make the Boeing supersonic transport an even more appealing investment for the airlines. This document presents the economic analysis on which these conclusions are based. The analyses conducted for the Phase I study demonstrated the overall operational feasibility of the Boeing variable sweep supersonic transport. However, break even load factors and direct operating costs were somewhat higher than the current subsonic jets. The major goal of Phase II-A was to improve the economics of the airplane. The Boeing supersonic transport achieves this goal. Its seat mile costs and break-even load factors are below those of the 707-320B at all operational ranges above approximately 1400 miles. The return on investment shows the profit potential of the airplane to be comparable to the 707-320B at the ranges specified in the FAA model.

Book excerpt: The study was directed to the development of cost estimating relations (CERs) to predict the costs of the Supersonic Transport (SST) and competing current and advanced subsonic transports. The CERs developed relate cost to physical, performance, and operational characteristics of the aircraft system and cover research and development (R and D) costs, investment costs, and both direct and indirect operating costs. The basic method used to develop the CERs consisted of multivariate regression analysis of historical data on similar systems. The equations so developed were modified to extend their applicability to SST physical characteristics and operating points. The report also summarizes the results of a study to develop aircraft system performance-cost relationships. Cost estimating relationships (CER's) were constructed to cover development (R and D) costs, production (investment) costs and airline operating costs (direct and indirect). Primary emphasis in application will be on supersonic aircraft designs proposed by airframe and engine manufacturers on 1 November 1964. (Author).
