Book excerpt: The rainfed agro ecosystem supports 40 per cent of the human and 65 per cent of the livestock population, provides 44 per cent of food requirement and it has played and continues to play a critical role in Indian agriculture (Singh et al., 2004). In such areas crop production becomes relatively difficult as it mainly depends upon the intensity and frequency of rainfall. Mixed crop livestock farming has been adopted by the farmers in these areas through generations of experience. Dairy production has become an important component of rural development programmes in the rainfed areas of India, and is considered as an instrument for socioeconomic change to improve income and quality of life. Thus an attempt has been made here to analyse, the cost of milk production, resource use efficiency and constraints faced by dairy farmers in vidarbha region of India.

Book excerpt: The present investigation has been undertaken to analyse the input-output relationship in milk production and to also to locate its relative importance in total farm output-mix. The economics of milk production was found to be cost effective where substantial areas were allocaed for cultivation of green fodder. The study of input-output relationship in production of milk has revealed that herd managment in terms of optimum stage of lactation, veterinary care and judicious mixture of green fodder and concentrate proved gainful in the enhancement of production. However, it was observed that disapropriate dependence on the dry fodder generated from the crop residue in less milk production efficiency. With regard to programming models, the study favoured putting limits on diversification of crop and livestock enterprises. the programming solutions also indicated that addition of technology doses financed by indtitutional sources might shift the enterprise preference in favour of high value, capital intensive production and activity mix for increased incomes with increased levels of gainful employment. Pertaining to some socio-economic constraints, it was felt that farmers responsiveess to the economicincentives with regard to augmented agrarian productivity can be only brought out through educational programes. The results further showed that policy instruments like input subsdiary programes, institutional financing and infra-structure development needs, if incorporated in the model can generate a balance of output mix in the region. Finally, it was observed that only alternative to avert the impending disaster is to be concentrate on radical crop and livestock based development of agrarian sector of the region.
