Book Growth Mechanisms and Sustainability

Download or read book Growth Mechanisms and Sustainability written by Jun Ma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad investigation of various issues in East Asia’s steel industry since the 1980s, including international specialization and trade relations, the sustainable use of resources, technological innovations, and environmental mitigation, alongside a consideration of the rapid growth in Chinese steel industry. Using macro and firm-level data, and case studies based on field research to discuss issues concerning the steel industry in East Asia. In search of an easy understanding, we try to simplify complicated economic models and statistical analyses, and concentrate on policy implications based as much as possible on the results of empirical analyses. We believe that this book will be of interest to policymakers, economists, practitioners and advocates of sustainability.

Book Politics vs Economics in World Steel Trade

Download or read book Politics vs Economics in World Steel Trade written by Kent Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be few industries which have generated as much political controversy as the world steel industry. Since 1968 the trade policies of both the US and the EEC have created a vicious circle of protectionism and delayed adjustment in their steel industries. In particular, protectionist policies by one government have tended to lead directly to rebound protectionist policies by the other. This book, first published in 1986, begins by tracing the historical roots of steel protectionism and describes the changing competitive structure of the world steel market which has led to increased government involvement in the traditional steel-making countries as they became vulnerable to imports from the newly industrialised countries. The most distinctive feature of the book is its economic analysis of a policy crisis; a crisis whose inner dynamics work against a viable solution.

Download or read book Big Steel written by Daniel Madar and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World steel production has grown dramatically as countries industrialize and add their own steel-producing capacity. China's prodigious expansion of steel output has increased the industry's natural vulnerability to oversupply and volatile prices. And the merger of the two largest steelmakers, Arcelor and Mittal, portends consolidation as a prime strategy for diversification and stabilization. This book examines the competition and survival strategies of the integrated steel industry from various vantage points including cost structures and technology, export pricing strategies, the economics of trade protection, Paul Krugman's Nobel Prize-winning explanation of industrial diffusion and trade, and the prospects of cooperating closely with automakers. The industry's future, Big Steel shows, is cosmopolitan.

Book Trade Policy and Market Power

Download or read book Trade Policy and Market Power written by Bruce A. Blonigen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A primary function of trade policy is to restrict imports to benefit the targeted domestic sector. However, a well-established theoretical literature highlights that the form of trade policy (e.g., quotas versus tariffs) can have a significant impact on how much trade policy affects firms' abilities to price above marginal cost (i.e., market power). The US steel industry provides an excellent example to study these issues, as it has received many different types of trade protection over the past decades. We model the US steel market and then use a panel of data on major steel products from 1980 through 2006 to examine the effects of various trade policies on the steel market. We find that the US steel market is very competitive throughout our sample with the exception of the period in which they received comprehensive voluntary restraint agreements (i.e., quotas) and were able to price substantially above marginal cost. All other forms of protection were in tariff form and had little effect on market power, consistent with prior theoretical literature on the nonequivalence of tariffs and quotas. We also find evidence that market power eroded over time in steel products where mini-mill producers gained sizeable market share, highlighting the role of technology in the market as well.

Book The Economics of the East Asia Steel Industries

Download or read book The Economics of the East Asia Steel Industries written by Yanrui Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, the objective of this book is to provide a detailed examination of steel production, consumption and trade in East Asia. Specifically, it addresses steel trade and investment environment in East Asia and forecasts steel price movement in the future. In addition, a major focus in this book is the investigation of the metals industry in China, Asia's emerging steel giant. Finally, one chapter of the book also documents the resource sector in Western Australia, one of the world's major sources of iron ore. Rapid economic growth over the past decade has significantly changed the gravity of Asia in the world economy. This trend has particularly been strengthened by the awakening giant, China, whose economy has been growing continuously at a two-digital rate since the late 1970's. Asian countries together have now consumed as much as steel as the developed economies. As a result, Asia as a region has become the key to the expansion of the global steel industry in the future.

Book The Steel Crisis

Download or read book The Steel Crisis written by William Scheuerman and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1986-07-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the causes underlying the decline of the United States steel industry and the impact of that decline on our institutions of procedural democracy. It locates steel's economic demise in the logic of an economy organized for profit maximization and demonstrates how the industry's economic policies helped open the U.S. market to foreign imports while simultaneously forcing steel officials to turn to the government for assistance.
