Book Inter Fiber Competition Econometric Modeling of U S Cotton and Polyester Fiber Demand

Download or read book Inter Fiber Competition Econometric Modeling of U S Cotton and Polyester Fiber Demand written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The estimation of the U.S. cotton and polyester demand is essential to effectively track both the performance of the U.S. domestic textile industry as well as the U.S. economic performance as reflected in consumer demand for these two fibers. In order to track the above mentioned parameters the two most effective benchmarks would be the U.S. fiber mill demand and U.S. total or retail fiber demand. The level of fiber demanded by U.S. mills for conversion into yarn and subsequently fabric and apparel, is reflective of the competitiveness of the U.S. spinning industry. This is true because the same fiber demand could be shifted to a low cost manufacturing base like Asia, South America or Mexico given their economies of scale and/or preferential trading agreements with the U.S. At the retail level, the total fiber demand for cotton and polyester are reflective of the U.S. consumer demand for cotton and polyester products, which in turn reflects the general U.S. economic performance. The inter-fiber competition dimension captures the demand substitution effects between cotton and polyester specifically. A review of previously published literature revealed some interesting observations about U.S. inter-fiber competition and their demand estimation. First, most of the models developed in the recent past focused on estimating U.S. inter-fiber demand between cotton and man-made fibers or between cotton and synthetic fibers. Earlier research work had clearly established that within man-made fibers, cotton shared a substitutive relationship only with synthetic fibers and not the cellulosic fibers even though data for individual fiber demand within synthetic fibers was not available. This effectively renders the clustering of all man-made fibers under one grouping ineffective in tracking the derived individual fiber demand. Further, with regards to competition to U.S. cotton, polyester is known to be its chief competitor. However, there was not a single model found in previous.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Cotton: Production, Problems, Potentials Mexico, since the revolution early in this century, has made phenomenal economic and social progress. The great est achievements, however, have occurred in the decade following World War II. There is every reason to believe that the country under sound leadership is destined to move on to a more complete utilization of its resources, and to a higher standard of living for its people. Book King Cotton in Modern America

Download or read book King Cotton in Modern America written by D. Clayton Brown and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Cotton in Modern America places the once kingly crop in historical perspective, showing how "cotton culture" was actually part of the larger culture of the United States despite many regarding its cultivation and sources as hopelessly backward. Leaders in the industry, acting through the National Cotton Council, organized the various and often conflicting segments to make the commodity a viable part of the greater American economy. The industry faced new challenges, particularly the rise of foreign competition in production and the increase of man-made fibers in the consumer market. Modernization and efficiency became key elements for cotton planters. The expansion of cotton- growing areas into the Far West after 1945 enabled American growers to compete in the world market. Internal dissension developed between the traditional cotton growing regions in the South and the new areas in the West, particularly over the USDA cotton allotment program. Mechanization had profound social and economic impacts. Through music and literature, and with special emphasis placed on the meaning of cotton to African Americans in the lore of Memphis's Beale Street, blues music, and African American migration off the land, author D. Clayton Brown carries cotton's story to the present.

Book Modeling Mexican Agricultural Production

Book excerpt: Results of time series tests (including unit root and deterministic and stochastic cointegration tests) imply that a mixture of differenced and cointegrated model specifications are warranted for econometric models of Mexican agricultural supplies and input demands. Test results are sensitive to choice of functional form and the set of regressors. For example, share equations should be estimated using differenced data, but output supply and input demand equations generally should not. Generalized Leontief and quadratic functional forms are preferred over the translog. Symmetry and curvature of a restricted profit function are rejected. Short-run output supplies and input demands are generally inelastic.

Book Economic Impact of the Maquiladora Industry in Mexico

Download or read book Economic Impact of the Maquiladora Industry in Mexico written by Ramon G. Guajardo-Quiroga and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maquiladora program, composed of assembly plants located in Mexico, is the result of special provisions in both Mexican and American law. This program plays a central role in a new development program, chosen by the Mexican government, based on an outward-oriented development strategy and liberalization of the economy. The broad objectives of this program are to provide sources of employment (particularly in the border zone), to generate foreign exchange, and to create linkages between the maquiladora industry and the rest of the Mexican economy. Maquiladoras have been the center of a great deal of controversy in both countries since their 1965 inception. This controversy is centered mainly on benefits and costs on these countries. Particularly in the case of Mexico, there is no unique answer to the question: is the maquiladora program an adequate development strategy? This study focuses on an empirical assessment of the maquiladora program. Estimation of impacts on value of output, income, and employment within the Mexican economy is the major contribution of this research. General multipliers for the Mexican economy are estimated and the role of the Maquiladoras is discussed. Additionally, two simulations are addressed: (1) increased maquiladora purchases within Mexico and (2) earnings leakage to the United States. The methodology used to address the objectives of this study is an interindustry (input-output) model for the Mexican economy that accounted for the maquiladora linkages with the economy. An input-output model was developed for the Mexican economy. To account the economic impacts of the maquiladora program the model includes 29 sectors. Twelve of these represent the economic activity of maquiladora industries. The results indicate that maquiladoras have relatively low output multipliers. About 33% of their total value of output resulted from secondary effects with other linked sectors in the Mexican economy. Of this, indirect output generated through maquiladora's input purchases was 7% and induced output generated through maquiladora workers purchases of goods and services was 26%. Maquiladoras also have relatively low impacts on the Mexican households income because of relatively low domestic input purchases. On average, maquiladora sectors are more capital intensive than the rest of the Mexican economy. This and their weak backward linkages resulted in relatively low employment impacts. Maquiladora workers spendings impacts were about 2.6 times larger than maquiladora input purchases impacts ...
