Book Review of Log Sort Yards

Download or read book Review of Log Sort Yards written by John Rusty Dramm and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a general overview of current log sort yard operations in the United States, including an extensive literature review and information collected during on-site visits to several operations throughout the nation. Log sort yards provide many services in marketing wood and fiber by concentrating, merchandising, processing, sorting, and adding value to logs. Such operations supply forest products firms with desired raw materials, which helps improve their bottom line by reducing the number of marginal logs processed. Ultimately, sorting logs leads to better use of the available timber resources. Successful log sort yards are self-sufficient and have well-established markets and a steady supply of wood. Log sort yard concepts and analyses described in this report have broad applications.

Book Canada United States Trade in Forest Products

Download or read book Canada United States Trade in Forest Products written by Russell S. Uhler and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the major economic and political factors that have led to the development of a particular pattern of trade in forest products, and it examines and compares the legal structures within which this trade takes place. Standard economic and political methods of analysis are used to study the history of this trade, including such recent developments as the Free Trade Agreement. Several of the chapters focus on two recent trade disputes involving Canadian exports of shakes and shingles and of softwood lumber to the United States. These disputes are instructive for understanding not only the politics of trade but also important economic issues such as the measurement and impact of timber subsidies. In addition, the authors consider the factors affecting foreign market share, and the burden of tariffs and export taxes.

Book Talk and Log

Download or read book Talk and Log written by Jeremy Wilson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, the fate of British Columbia’s old-growth forests has been a major source of political strife. While more than 5 million hectares of wood were being clearcut, the BC wilderness movement and forest industry supporters clashed, as they continue to do, both pressing their arguments in a variety of forums, ranging from television studios and logging road blockades to royal commission hearings and cabinet ministers’ offices. The resulting record of conflict confirms American historian Paul Hirt’s characterization of forest policy as "party an ideological issue, partly biological, partly economic, partly technical, and wholly political." Talk and Log is a comprehensive account of the rise and impact of the BC wilderness movement between 1965 and 1996. Jeremy Wilson examines the evolution of the movement’s approaches, evaluates the forest industry’s counterstrategies, and analyzes the patterns and trends underlying shifts in provincial government forest, environment, and parks policies. He describes the "war in the woods" triggered by environmentalists’ efforts to preserve areas such as South Moresby and the Carmanah Valley, and considers the complex forces that pushed the government to expand the protected areas system. Wilson’s perceptive analysis of Social Credit’s failed policies of the 1980s is followed by an assessment of the Harcourt NDP government’s reform iniatives, including the Commission on Resources and Environment (CORE) and the Forest Practices Code. Talk and Log is based on a variety of sources, including government documents, environmental group briefs, and interviews with several dozen politicians, government officials, environmentalists, and forest industry leaders. This book deftly illuminates the forces behind controversies that have divided British Columbians and drawn the attention of people around the world. It is also a thought-provoking examination of issues likely to dominate political debates in BC for decades to come.
