Book Estuary Birds of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Estuary Birds of Britain and Ireland written by A.J Prater and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are rightly of great interest and concern to the birdwatcher. Most teem with thousands of waders, geese, ducks, gulls and other species that use them at times throughout the year; they are also among the last of the wild places left in Britain and Europe. The Birds of Estuaries Enquiry (sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council and organised by the BTO, RSPB and the Wildfowl Trust) spanned six years, and Tony Prater's report now provides a detailed insight into the birds which use and, in many cases, depend on this special habitat. Of great interest to birdwatchers, the book also will be essential reading for professional conservationists and all involved in the planning and use of estuaries. It assesses the importance of each estuary and the distribution and numbers of all species generally present, and by setting this in an international framework demonstrates the remarkable importance of the estuaries around these islands. Threats to the fabric of the landscape and its wildlife abound, and estuaries are not exempt. Barrage schemes, industrial and agricultural reclamations and many other pressures exist and are the subject of chapters which survey the situation, now and in the future. The text is graced by John Busby's accomplished and evocative drawings and there are numerous maps and diagrams as well as photographs of typical estuaries. Jacket illustration by John Busby.

Book Fine Scale Survey of Metals Nutrients and Lipid Biomarkers in the Conwy Estuary

Download or read book Fine Scale Survey of Metals Nutrients and Lipid Biomarkers in the Conwy Estuary written by Caroline Duce and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental quality of coastal ecosystems is an issue of growing international attention. Estuarine organic matter is derived from a multitude of natural and anthropogenic allochthonous and autochthonous sources that originate across a freshwater continuum. Various point and diffuse sources, such as discharges of treated and untreated sewage as well as urban and agricultural run-off, contribute significantly to the deterioration of the water and sediment quality of aquatic ecosystems. The EU Water Framework Directive requires all surface waters to fulfil the criterion of "good ecological status" by the end of 2021, this status is defined with reference to undisturbed conditions. Within heavily impacted coastal areas with no prior monitoring of baseline data assessing these reference conditions will be inherently difficult. Understanding near-pristine conditions within estuaries provides reference sites for assessing natural variability of organic and inorganic chemical parameters which in turn will provide baseline conditions for management to allow them to distinguish between changes caused by human and those that are natural.A fine scale survey of metals, nutrients and lipid biomarkers was investigated within an estuary that was perceived to be of relatively pristine condition. The data obtained has been used to assess existing models that aimed to define elevated versus baseline concentrations. The majority of the data focused on the sediment fraction due to its importance as a historic sink of organic and inorganic compounds which in turn enables an understanding of the potential inputs from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Regional geochemical baseline models were constructed for metals and nutrients to enable an understanding whether the organic and inorganic compounds were from natural or anthropogenic origins. The lipid biomarkers were utilised to establish the origin of the organic matter. Within the Conwy estuary there were a number of locations that yielded higher concentrations that were deemed above background levels, these have been discussed to highlight potential sources of contamination. A proportion of locations sampled fell below those that were deemed enriched for metals, nutrients and lipids resulting in concentration ranges of pristine conditions which other contaminated estuaries can refer to.

Book Criminal and Environmental Soil Forensics

Download or read book Criminal and Environmental Soil Forensics written by Karl Ritz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-23 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils have important roles to play in criminal and environmental forensic science. Since the initial concept of using soil in forensic investigations was mooted by Conan Doyle in his Sherlock Holmes stories prior to real-world applications, this branch of forensic science has become increasingly sophisticated and broad. New techniques in chemical, physical, biological, ecological and spatial analysis, coupled with informatics, are being applied to reducing areas of search by investigators, site identification, site comparison and measurement for the eventual use as evidence in court. Soils can provide intelligence, in assisting the determination of the provenance of samples from artifacts, victims or suspects, enabling their linkage to locations or other evidence. They also modulate change in surface or buried cadavers and hence affect the ability to estimate post-mortem or post-burial intervals, and locate clandestine graves. This interdisciplinary volume explores the conceptual and practical interplay of soil and geoforensics across the scientific, investigative and legal fields. Supported by reviews, case-studies from across the world, and reports of original research, it demonstrates the increasing convergence of a wide range of knowledge. It covers conceptual issues, evidence (from recovery to use in court), geoforensics, taphonomy, as well as leading-edge technologies. The application of the resultant soil forensics toolbox is leading to significant advances in improving crime detection, and environmental and national security.

Book The Geological Record of Ecological Dynamics

Download or read book The Geological Record of Ecological Dynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to answer important questions about ecosystems and biodiversity, scientists can look to the past geological recordâ€"which includes fossils, sediment and ice cores, and tree rings. Because of recent advances in earth scientists' ability to analyze biological and environmental information from geological data, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey asked a National Research Council (NRC) committee to assess the scientific opportunities provided by the geologic record and recommend how scientists can take advantage of these opportunities for the nation's benefit. The committee identified three initiatives for future research to be developed over the next decade: (1) use the geological record as a "natural laboratory" to explore changes in living things under a range of past conditions, (2) use the record to better predict the response of biological systems to climate change, and (3) use geologic information to evaluate the effects of human and non-human factors on ecosystems. The committee also offered suggestions for improving the field through better training, improved databases, and additional funding.
