Book excerpt: The third book in Michael Grant's New York Times bestselling Gone series, Lies is another heart-in-your-throat page-turner, both chilling and thought-provoking. It's been seven months since all the adults disappeared. Gone. It happens in one night. A girl who died now walks among the living; Zil and the Human Crew set fire to Perdido Beach, and amid the flames and smoke, Sam sees the figure of the boy he fears the most: Drake. But Drake is dead. Sam and Caine defeated him along with the Darkness—or so they thought. As Perdido Beach burns, battles rage: Astrid against the Town Council; the Human Crew versus the mutants; and Sam against Drake, who is back from the dead and ready to finish where he and Sam left off. And all the while deadly rumors are raging like the fire itself, spread by the prophetess Orsay and her companion, Nerezza. They say that death is a way to escape the FAYZ. Conditions are worse than ever and kids are desperate to get out. But are they desperate enough to believe that death will set them free? “Disturbing, brilliantly plotted, and boasting a balanced mix of action and scheming.” —ALA Booklist Read the entire series: Gone Hunger Lies Plague Fear Light Monster Villain Hero

Book excerpt: When a man speaks words against or in favor of another man, whether he knows it or not, he is speaking those very same words against or in favor of himself. The Bible tells us to do unto others the things that we would want done unto us or in our behalf. Well, that is the very same principle that God set down with words. What we say to others should be what we would want said to us. And whether we want them to or not they will come to pass in our lives. There is a law of nature that says that when you plant a seed you will, in time, reap a harvest. Just so, when you speak a word, since your word is a seed, you will reap a harvest. Given the right amount of time you will reap what you sow. Jesus said that if you had faith and you wanted that faith to grow plant it and it will grow. Jesus gave you seeds for whatever you need, they are called words. But you decide; are your words going to be good or bad? Either way they will grow and you will reap what you sow.

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2003-09-02

Download or read book They Lie We Lie written by Peter Metcalf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Lie, We Lie is an attempt by an experienced fieldworker to engage recent critiques in ethnography, that is the writing of culture, made both from within anthropology and from such disciplines as cultural studies and post-colonial theory. This is necessary because there has been a polarization within anthropology between those who react dismissively to what Marshall Sahlins calls 'afterology' and those who find the critiques so crippling as to make it hard to get on with anthropology at all. Metcalf bridges this divide by analyzing the contradictions of fieldwork in connection with a particular 'informant', a formidable old lady who tried for twenty years to control what he would and would not learn. At each stage, the author draws out the general implications of his predicament by making comparisions to the most famous of all fieldwork relationships, that between Victor Turner and Muchona. The result is an account that is accessible to those unfamiliar with the current critiques of ethnography, and helpful to those who are only too familiar to them. His discussion shows, not how to evade the critiques, but how in fact anthropologists have coped with the existential dilemmas of fieldwork.

In a world gone to hell, better to choose the devil you know… The world didn't end in fire and explosions, instead after an intensifying panic of disease, food shortages, wild weather, and floundering economies, it collapsed like slow falling dominoes, until what remained of humanity battles for survival in a harsh new reality. As a ‘Hound, Charity puts the lethal survival skills learned at an early age to use by sniffing out pivotal secrets for one of the most powerful leaders on what remains of the west coast. As one of Fate’s Vultures, a nomadic band of ruthless arbitrators, Ruin knows well the type of carnage created by the corruption and greed of what remains of humanity, so when he rides into a brutal murder scene and discovers his friend has been taken hostage, he’ll use whatever resources he can to save him. Even if one of those resources is a damn ‘Hound who’s clearly trouble. Trouble, Ruin knows he should avoid, especially since the suspicious circumstance of Charity’s involvement leaves every cell of his body skeptical - and painfully aroused. But Fate has other plans, especially when Ruin and Charity realize they have a common enemy. Can they set aside their distrust to achieve their mutual goal of justice and revenge? Book Lying Down in the Ever Falling Snow

Download or read book Lying Down in the Ever Falling Snow written by Wendy Austin and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First used to describe the weariness the public felt toward media portrayals of societal crises, the term compassion fatigue has been taken up by health professionals to name—along with burnout, vicarious traumatization, compassion stress, and secondary traumatic stress—the condition of caregivers who become “too tired to care.” Compassion, long seen as the foundation of ethical caring, is increasingly understood as a threat to the well-being of those who offer it. Through the lens of hermeneutic phenomenology, the authors present an insider’s perspective on compassion fatigue, its effects on the body, on the experience of time and space, and on personal and professional relationships. Accounts of health professionals, alongside examinations of poetry, images, movies, and literature, are used to explore the notions of compassion, hope, and hopelessness as they inform the meaning of caring work. The authors frame their exposé of compassion fatigue with the very Canadian metaphor of “lying down in the snow.” If suffering is imagined as ever-falling snow, then the need for training and resources for safe journeying in “winter country” becomes apparent. Recognizing the phenomenon of compassion fatigue reveals the role that health services education and the moral habitability of our healthcare environments play in supporting professionals’ ability to act compassionately and to endure.

Book Curtain of Lies

Download or read book Curtain of Lies written by Melissa Feinberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Cold War governments of Eastern Europe operated within the confines of the Soviet worldview, their peoples confronted the narratives of both East and West. From the Soviet Union and its satellites, they heard of a West dominated by imperialist warmongers and of the glorious future only Communism could bring. A competing discourse emanated from the West, claiming that Eastern Europe was a totalitarian land of captive slaves, powerless in the face of Soviet aggression. In Curtain of Lies, Melissa Feinberg conducts a timely examination into the nature of truth, using the political culture of Eastern Europe during the Cold War as her foundation. Focusing on the period between 1948 and 1956, she looks at how the "truth" of Eastern Europe was delineated by actors on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Feinberg offers a fresh interpretation of the Cold War as a shared political environment, exploring the ways in which ordinary East Europeans interacted with these competing understandings of their homeland. She approaches this by looking at the relationship between the American-sponsored radio stations broadcast across the Iron Curtain and the East European émigrés they interviewed as sources on life under Communism. Feinberg's careful analysis reveals that these parties developed mutually reinforced assumptions about the meaning of Communism, helping to create the evidentiary foundation for totalitarian interpretations of Communist rule in Eastern Europe. In bridging the geopolitical and the individual, Curtain of Lies provides a perspective that is both innovative in its methodology and indispensable to its field.
