This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History From the Thirteenth to the Nineteenth Century This second volume of the Manual of Ecclesiastical History completes the work, the first volume of which was issued four years ago. That volume brought the history down to the close of the reign of Innocent III., the commencement of the thirteenth century; and the present volume resumes the history at that point, and continues it to the beginning of the nineteenth century. While each volume forms a complete history of a definite period in itself, the two volumes constitute a continuous narrative of the prominent events of Church History for the eighteen centuries. It is unnecessary for the author to state again the extreme difficulty of telling so long and complicated a story in so short a space; and to repeat the assurance of the anxious care and labor with which he has striven to overcome that difficulty, and to present the facts in their right relative position of importance. Download or read book Founding the Fathers written by Elizabeth A. Clark and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through their teaching of early Christian history and theology, Elizabeth A. Clark contends, Princeton Theological Seminary, Harvard Divinity School, Yale Divinity School, and Union Theological Seminary functioned as America's closest equivalents to graduate schools in the humanities during the nineteenth century. These four Protestant institutions, founded to train clergy, later became the cradles for the nonsectarian study of religion at secular colleges and universities. Clark, one of the world's most eminent scholars of early Christianity, explores this development in Founding the Fathers: Early Church History and Protestant Professors in Nineteenth-Century America. Based on voluminous archival materials, the book charts how American theologians traveled to Europe to study in Germany and confronted intellectual currents that were invigorating but potentially threatening to their faith. The Union and Yale professors in particular struggled to tame German biblical and philosophical criticism to fit American evangelical convictions. German models that encouraged a positive view of early and medieval Christianity collided with Protestant assumptions that the church had declined grievously between the Apostolic and Reformation eras. Trying to reconcile these views, the Americans came to offer some counterbalance to traditional Protestant hostility both to contemporary Roman Catholicism and to those historical periods that had been perceived as Catholic, especially the patristic era.

Translated from Latin into various other languages, Bede's fascinating history has long been widely studied. Thirteen centuries later, this thorough and reliable guide by J. Robert Wright enables today's readers to follow the major English translations of Bede's work and to understand exactly what Bede was saying, what he meant, and why his words and account remain so important. Wright'sCompanion to Bede provides the answers to most questions that careful, intelligent readers of Bede are apt to ask. Despite the countless numbers of books and articles about Bede, there is no other comprehensive companion to his text that can be read in tandem with the medieval author himself. A Giniger book
