Book The Mycenaean Settlement on Tsoungiza Hill

Download or read book The Mycenaean Settlement on Tsoungiza Hill written by Mary K. Dabney and published by American School of Classical Studies at Athens. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 1235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hill dominating the Nemea Valley, Tsoungiza is located only 10 kilometers northwest of the citadel of Mycenae. Excavations there have uncovered the remains of a Late Helladic settlement that stood at its southern end. This volume presents the results of these investigations with an unprecedented study of a small settlement's economy and society in the Mycenaean period. Through an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates a wide variety of general and specialist studies, the authors demonstrate how agricultural production, craft activities, and ceremonial practices integrated the inhabitants of Tsoungiza into a regional exchange system within the Bronze Age world. The volume includes contributions by P. Acheson, S. E. Allen, K. M. Forste, P. Halstead, S. M. A. Hoffmann, A. Karabatsoli, K. Kaza-Papageorgiou, B. Lis, R. Mersereau, H. Mommsen, J. B. Rutter, T. Theodoropoulou, and J. E. Tomlinson.

Book Mycenaean Greece Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Mycenaean Greece Routledge Revivals written by John T Hooker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycenaean Greece, first published in 1976, investigates from an historical point of view some of the crucial periods in the Greek Bronze Age. The principal subject is the so-called ‘Mycenaean’ culture which arose during the sixteenth century BC, as assimilation of the previous ‘Helladic’ culture of mainland Greece with some of the developments of Minoan Crete. Many of the material aspects of the Mycenaean civilisation are examined, as are the extent of Mycenaean expansion overseas and the eventual destruction of Mycenaean sites which marked the end of their civilisation. The author also considers the evidence relating to the religious beliefs of the Mycenaeans and their social, political and economic organisations, and he relates the Mycenaean culture to the later civilisation of Archaic and Classical Greece. There is an Appendix containing a list of Mycenaean sites, with reference to excavation reports, and a full bibliography.

Book Mycenaean Messenia and the Kingdom of Pylos

Download or read book Mycenaean Messenia and the Kingdom of Pylos written by Richard Hope Simpson and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study outlines the state of our present knowledge concerning the Mycenaean settlements in Messenia and examines the evidence for reconstructing the political geography of the "Kingdom" of Pylos. The progress of archaeological exploration in Messenia is reviewed in relation to the Mycenaean (Late Helladic [LH]) period. The data from excavations and surveys concerning the Mycenaean settlements in Messenia are summarized. The author attempts to determine the extent of the "Kingdom" and to identify the locations of its main districts by correlating the archaeological data from Mycenaean sites with the the inscriptions in Linear B found in the "Palace of Nestor" at Ano Englianos.

This book was released on 2007-02-05 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So careful and complete a study of late Mycenaean remains as is included in this volume has never before been made. On the basis of a very thorough examination of all types of artifacts from all regions of the Mycenaean world the author is able to make observations concerning events in the Aegean between 1200 and 1000 BC that probably come as close to the actual course of events as presently available material permits. --Saul S. Weinberg, University of Missouri, for American Journal of Archaeology

Book Mycenaean Civilization

  • Author : Bryan Feuer
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2004-03-16
  • ISBN : 078641748X
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book Mycenaean Civilization written by Bryan Feuer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.

Book Social Change in Aegean Prehistory

Download or read book Social Change in Aegean Prehistory written by Corien Wiersma and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers that discuss social change. The main focus is on the Early Helladic III to Late Helladic I period in southern Greece, but also touches upon the surrounding islands. This specific timeframe enables us to consider how mainland societies recovered from a ‘crisis’ and how they eventually developed into the differentiated, culturally receptive and competitive social formations of the early Mycenaean period. Material changes are highlighted in the various papers, ranging from pottery and burials to domestic architecture and settlement structures, followed by discussions of how these changes relate to social change. A variety of factors is thereby considered including demographic changes, reciprocal relations and sumptuary behavior, household organization and kin structure, age and gender divisions, internal tensions, connectivity and mobility. As such, this volume is of interest to both Aegean prehistorians as to scholars interested in social and material change. The volume consists of eight papers, preceded by an introduction and concluded by a response. The introduction gives an overview of the development of the debate on the explanation of social change in Aegean prehistory. The response places the volume in a broader context of the EH III-LH I period and the broader discussion on social change.

Book From Cooking Vessels to Cultural Practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean

Download or read book From Cooking Vessels to Cultural Practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean written by Julie Hruby and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Bronze Age Aegean cooking vessels illuminate prehistoric cultures, foodways, social interactions, and communication systems. While many scholars have focused on the utility of painted fineware vessels for chronological purposes, the contributors to this volume maintain that cooking wares have the potential to answer not only chronological but also economic, political, and social questions when analysed and contrasted with assemblages from different sites or chronological periods. The text is dedicated entirely to prehistoric cooking vessels, compiles evidence from a wide range of Greek sites and incorporates new methodologies and evidence. The contributors utilise a wide variety of analytical approaches and demonstrate the impact that cooking vessels can have on the archaeological interpretation of sites and their inhabitants. These sites include major Late Bronze Age citadels and smaller settlements throughout the Aegean and surrounding Mediterranean area, including Greece, the islands, Crete, Italy, and Cyprus. In particular, contributors highlight socio-economic connections by examining the production methods, fabrics and forms of cooking vessels. Recent improvements in excavation techniques, advances in archaeological sciences, and increasing attention to socioeconomic questions make this is an opportune time to renew conversations about and explore new approaches to cooking vessels and what they can teach us.
