Book An Automated Biological Monitoring Facility for Rapidly and Continuously Assessing Industrial Effluents

Download or read book An Automated Biological Monitoring Facility for Rapidly and Continuously Assessing Industrial Effluents written by KL. Dickson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous and automatic biological monitoring facility has been developed to measure the toxicity of industrial effluents to aquatic organisms. The ventilatory rates of bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, are monitored with the aid of a minicomputer. The biomonitoring and auxiliary components have been housed within a 9.75 by 3.66-m (32 by 12-ft) trailer to facilitate on-site monitoring. Other incorporations include a continuous-flow acute bioassay unit, probes for monitoring conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature, and an automatic water sampler. Initial testing employing the petroleum industry's arbitrary reference mixture, two synthetic chlorinated effluents, and an effluent from a U.S. Army ammunition plant has demonstrated the potential of the present system for monitoring industrial wastewaters.

Book excerpt: Research into ecotoxicology can be classified into three fundamental concerns: abiotic factors, which characterize the physicochemistry of environments; biotic factors, relating to biological structures and functions; and contamination factors, which define the modes of pollution of ecosystems. The most significant research methodologies currently being developed in aquatic ecotoxicology are presented, specifically experimental approaches in the laboratory

Book Automated Biomonitoring

Download or read book Automated Biomonitoring written by David Gruber and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1988 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water quality continues to present problems of global concern and has resulted in greatly increased use of automated biological systems in monitoring drinking water, industrial effluents and wastewaters. This book presents frontier knowledge of an emerging form of biological technology, and presents a range of developments which are becoming inherent in today's monitoring systems. The work presented in this book shows some exciting possibilities which are likely to produce a beneficial technology for mankind.

Book Evaluation of an Automated Biological Monitoring System at an Industrial Site

Download or read book Evaluation of an Automated Biological Monitoring System at an Industrial Site written by WH. van der Schalie and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using biological monitoring of industrial point sources as a tool for river management has been demonstrated by a number of laboratory simulations. However, it is another task entirely to move these techniques to an industrial setting. The necessary modifications of a computerized biological monitoring system to install it in the Celanese Corporation Plant on the New River in Virginia are described. The system employs the respiration rates of bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) as an indicator of abnormal variations in the effluent.
