It shows the lived experiences of Black motherhood, when mothering is shaped by race, gender, and class, and mothers must navigate not only their own, but also their children's positions in society. Ferdinand takes an intimate look at her mothering strategies spanning ten years (from 2007 to 2017), preparing her daughter to traverse a racist and sexist society. It is a multi-generational text that blends the author’s experience with that of her own mother, grandmother, and her daughter, to engage in a larger discussion of African American/Black mother/womanhood. It is grounded within Black Feminist Theory, which centers the experiences of Black women within the domains of intersecting oppressions. It is from a very personal position that Ferdinand provides a glimpse into the minutiae of mothering that reveal the everyday intricacies of Black women as mothers. It highlights specific strategies Black mothers use to combat discrimination and oppression, from teaching their children about the n-word to choosing positive representations of Black identity in movies, books, dolls, daycares, elementary schools, and even extra-curricular activities. It shows the impact that stereotypical manifestations of Black femininity have on Black women’s experience of motherhood, and how this affects Black women and girls' understanding of themselves, especially their skin color, body shape, and hair texture. As an interdisciplinary text, this book will be reading for academics and students in a broad range of fields, including Education, African American Studies, Communication Studies, Women Studies, Psychology and Health Studies. It is also a handbook of lived experience for Black mothers, grandmothers, and daughters, and for all mothers, grandmothers, and daughters irrespective of color.

Black women’s maternity is assumed, and yet is also silenced within the disembodied, patriarchal, racist, antifamily, and increasingly neoliberal work environment of academia. This volume acknowledges the salience of the institutional challenges facing contemporary caregiving academics; yet it is centrally concerned with expanding the academic mothering conversation by speaking against the private/public spheres approach. Laboring Positions does so by privileging the hybridity between Black women’s mothering experiences and their working lives within and beyond the academy. The collection also intentionally blurs essentialist boundaries of mother and “other”, which dictates and generates alternate border zones of knowledge production concerning Black academic women’s working lives. In doing so, the diverse perspectives captured herein offer us cogent starting points from which to interrogate the interlocking cultural, political, and economic hierarchies of the academy. The editorial goal of Laboring Positions is to offer a polyvocal collection embodying themes that privilege and arouse Black mothering as central in the narratives, research, and models of existence and resistance for Black women’s survival within the academy. Most research in the field of education concerning women reflects women in general and is not specific to African American women. More research is needed for and by African American women as it pertains to the study of female leadership on secondary public school campuses. The traditional high school principal is White, male, married, and middle income. With the inception of President Obama's Race to the Top and the age of accountability, the traditional building principal motif is changing. Accountability and higher standards have changed just about every aspect of education. his autoethnography represents my professional journey as it pertains to obtaining a principalship in a high school. As the story was written, it became apparent though my writings in order to explain the journey, it was evident I needed to share my life experiences about who I am to further bring understanding and clarity to the study. Being Black and female, compounded by the attainment of a high level of education, predictably creates problems on both a professional and personal level. The research is shared through traditional research methods as well as vignettes or anecdotes to tell the story. Storytelling is important because it adds context to the situation and allows the reader not only to comprehend but to also become part of the experience. The review of the literature for this autoethnographic journey signified African American women as a renewed prototype for effective school leadership, especially as it pertained to schools with placed at-risk children. Theoretical framework included Womanism, Critical Race Theory, Female Leadership, Cultural Identity, Principal Leadership and the history of African Americans as educational leaders. My findings, based on research presented, although scarcity exists among African American female high school principals; we are now believed to possess the qualities necessary for a school to be successful. This scarcity is caused by lack of African American mentors and sexism and/or racism in hiring practices.
