Download or read book The Hysteric written by Eleanor Bowen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining historical, clinical and artistic material, in both written and visual form, this book traces the figure of the contemporary hysteric as she rebels against the impossible demands made upon her. Exploring five traits that commonly characterise the hysteric as an archetype – a specific body, mimetic abilities, a shroud of mystery, a propensity to disappear and a particular relationship to voice – the authors shed light on what it means to be hysterical, as a form of rebellion and resistance. This is important reading for scholars of sociology, gender studies, cultural studies and visual studies with interests in psychoanalysis, art and the characterisation of mental illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2010 Reprint of 1927 First English Edition. Professor Freud's autobiography, first published in English in 1927, is written in his usual forceful, straightforward and frank style, which has now become so familiar to readers of psychoanalytic literature. The autobiography as a whole is really a condensed account of the development of the psychoanalytic concepts as they unfolded themselves in Professor Freud's mind, and he says this much of it and adds that "no personal experiences of mine are of any interest in comparison to my relation with that science."

Book excerpt: Jalal Toufic?s ?Postscripts? appears on the occasion of the exhibition ?Let?s be honest, the weather helped? by Walid Raad at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. The author has made known that some works are not just thought-provoking, they are also initiations into thinking. The aphorisms included in ?Postscripts? function as supplements to Toufic?s previous books, being at the same time both clarifications and disclosures of his earlier material. It is a series of thought experiments constructed from discontinuous scenes, reflections, and questions about the complex relationship between reality and fiction, simulation and phantasy, dreaming and wakefulness, and life and death.
Download or read book Making Meaning written by David BORDWELL and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Bordwell's new book is at once a history of film criticism, an analysis of how critics interpret film, and a proposal for an alternative program for film studies. It is an anatomy of film criticism meant to reset the agenda for film scholarship. As such Making Meaning should be a landmark book, a focus for debate from which future film study will evolve. Bordwell systematically maps different strategies for interpreting films and making meaning, illustrating his points with a vast array of examples from Western film criticism. Following an introductory chapter that sets out the terms and scope of the argument, Bordwell goes on to show how critical institutions constrain and contain the very practices they promote, and how the interpretation of texts has become a central preoccupation of the humanities. He gives lucid accounts of the development of film criticism in France, Britain, and the United States since World War II; analyzes this development through two important types of criticism, thematic-explicatory and symptomatic; and shows that both types, usually seen as antithetical, in fact have much in common. These diverse and even warring schools of criticism share conventional, rhetorical, and problem-solving techniques--a point that has broad-ranging implications for the way critics practice their art. The book concludes with a survey of the alternatives to criticism based on interpretation and, finally, with the proposal that a historical poetics of cinema offers the most fruitful framework for film analysis.

Download or read book The Transmission of Affect written by Teresa Brennan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that one can soak up someone else's depression or anxiety or sense the tension in a room is familiar. Indeed, phrases that capture this notion abound in the popular vernacular: "negative energy," "dumping," "you could cut the tension with a knife." The Transmission of Affect deals with the belief that the emotions and energies of one person or group can be absorbed by or can enter directly into another. The ability to borrow or share states of mind, once historically and culturally assumed, is now pathologized, as Teresa Brennan shows in relation to affective transfer in psychiatric clinics and the prevalence of psychogenic illness in contemporary life. To neglect the mechanism by which affect is transmitted, the author claims, has serious consequences for science and medical research.Brennan's theory of affect is based on constant communication between individuals and their physical and social environments. Her important book details the relationships among affect, energy, and "new maladies of the soul," including attention deficit disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, codependency, and fibromyalgia.

Download or read book A History of the Case Study written by Birgit Lang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection tells the story of the case study genre at a time when it became the genre par excellence for discussing human sexuality across the humanities and life sciences. It is a transcontinental journey from the imperial world of fin-de-siècle Central Europe to the interwar metropolises of Weimar Germany and to the United States of America in the post-war years. Foregrounding the figures of case study pioneers, and highlighting their often radical engagements with the genre, the book scrutinises the case writing practices of Sigmund Freud and his predecessor sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing; writers including Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and Alfred Döblin; Weimar intellectuals such as Erich Wulffen and psychoanalyst Viola Bernard. The results are important new insights into the continuing legacy of such writers and into the agency increasingly claimed by the readerships that emerged with the development of modernity.
