Book excerpt: Communities rallying in the name of history have become a common phenomenon. Typically, the potential loss of a historic building or site serves as the catalyst. In the case of An Augusta Scrapbook: Twentieth-Century Memories, a book brought Augustans together in the name of history. The community participation created a historical collage, representing a spectrum of photographic recollections. It is a glimpse at the significant, the uncommon, and the ordinary. The compilation of images, nevertheless, captures Augusta's community fabric.

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Freddie Me written by Tripp Bowden and published by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though he was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, home of fabled Augusta National and The Masters, as a child Tripp Bowden was too young and too removed from the game of golf to realize what Augusta National really was, what it meant to his town and the world and the sport; its history, nostalgia, prestige and secrecy. All the ten year old Bowden knew about golf was that it was a stupid game that took up too much of his father’s time, and that he’d much rather kick around a soccer ball or stay home and read a book. But all that changed once Bowden’s father, a renowned local doctor, introduced him to one of his patients, Freddie Bennett, the legendary Augusta National caddie master. Though Bowden was a white child of considerable privilege and Bennett was an older black gentleman of more modest means, the two formed an unusual bond. It was Bennett who introduced Bowden to the game of golf, a sport that would one day earn him a Division 1 golf scholarship and lead him to the final stage of a British Open qualifier. But it was the lessons Bennett taught the young Bowden off the course that had their profoundest impact on his life. Through Freddie and his particular brand of homespun wisdom, the author learned invaluable lessons about personal responsibility, hard work, and respect for others regardless of age, race or religion. He also learned that there’s much more to life than just playing golf. Soon to be a major motion picture, Freddie & Me is a heartwarming tale of an uncommon bond forged through sport.

Book excerpt: The story of James U. Jackson and the history of North Augusta are inseparable. In the 1800s, James U. Jackson was one of the youngest railroad officials in the country. As a boy, he dreamed of developing the area on the bluffs across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia. That dream became a reality in 1906, when the community of North Augusta was incorporated. Not only a man of vision, Jackson's energy, drive, and personality enabled him to secure financial backing from several cities for his business ventures. His interurban railway, one of the first in the South, contributed to the development of the area's resort hotel industry, which catered to many people from the North during the winter months. Today, North Augusta's riverfront development continues, distinguishing it as a strong and independent community. James U. Jackson's dream continues to prosper.

People wrote letters thanking "The Goose Lady" for putting a smile on their faces and stirring joy in their hearts. TV reporters and local papers wrote stories about the goose and Down East Magazine listed "The Augusta Goose" as one of Maine's treasured monuments in its June 1999 edition. Marjorie helped pick out the goose's outfits until her death in December, 2014 just a few weeks before her 96th birthday. Goose now resides at Farrington Elementary School, a mile from Marjorie's home. Each day, school children choose outfits to dress Goose.

Book The Palatine Wreck

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill Farinelli
  • Publisher : University Press of New England
  • Release : 2017-09-05
  • ISBN : 1512601179
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book The Palatine Wreck written by Jill Farinelli and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two days after Christmas in 1738, a British merchant ship traveling from Rotterdam to Philadelphia grounded in a blizzard on the northern tip of Block Island, twelve miles off the Rhode Island coast. The ship carried emigrants from the Palatinate and its neighboring territories in what is now southwest Germany. The 105 passengers and crew on board-sick, frozen, and starving-were all that remained of the 340 men, women, and children who had left their homeland the previous spring. They now found themselves castaways, on the verge of death, and at the mercy of a community of strangers whose language they did not speak. Shortly after the wreck, rumors began to circulate that the passengers had been mistreated by the ship's crew and by some of the islanders. The stories persisted, transforming over time as stories do and, in less than a hundred years, two terrifying versions of the event had emerged. In one account, the crew murdered the captain, extorted money from the passengers by prolonging the voyage and withholding food, then abandoned ship. In the other, the islanders lured the ship ashore with a false signal light, then murdered and robbed all on board. Some claimed the ship was set ablaze to hide evidence of these crimes, their stories fueled by reports of a fiery ghost ship first seen drifting in Block Island Sound on the one-year anniversary of the wreck. These tales became known as the legend of the Palatine, the name given to the ship in later years, when its original name had been long forgotten. The flaming apparition was nicknamed the Palatine Light. The eerie phenomenon has been witnessed by hundreds of people over the centuries, and numerous scientific theories have been offered as to its origin. Its continued reappearances, along with the attention of some of nineteenth-century America's most notable writers-among them Richard Henry Dana Sr., John Greenleaf Whittier, Edward Everett Hale, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson-has helped keep the legend alive. This despite evidence that the vessel, whose actual name was the Princess Augusta, was never abandoned, lured ashore, or destroyed by fire. So how did the rumors begin? What really happened to the Princess Augusta and the passengers she carried on her final, fatal voyage? Through years of painstaking research, Jill Farinelli reconstructs the origins of one of New England's most chilling maritime mysteries.
