Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Attempt to Answer the Question: Whose Children Are Entitled Titled to Baptism? The importance of the subject discussed in the following chapters Will hardly be de nied. If it be important that our children be baptized at all, it is important that all should be, that are entitled to the ordinance. The question of right has greatly agitated our churches, and notwithstanding the signal den feat that was sustained by the advocates of the exclusive system, in the decision of the Synod of '34, Opinions remain unchanged. Many are still grieved that their children are refused a place in the church, While they consider them entitled to that privilege. On the other hand, conscience is pleaded for re jecting them, as if it would be a profanation of holy things to receive them. Nothing can produce uniformity of practice, but uniformity in the principles adopted and any thing that looks like an approximation to this, must be the result, not of Synodical decisions, but of free and friendly discussion. Under this conviction the writer was dis posed to commence such a discussion in the columns of the Christian Intelligencer But the prudent Editors, fearful of the strife of pens, apprehended inconvenience from the design, and it was abandoned. The subject, however, continued to occupy a portion of at tention, and the following essay is the result. It would perhaps be a piece of vanity to an ticipate more from its publication, than the calling of the minds of our ministers and peo ple in some degree to the claims of our chil dren. The truth lies somewhere, and although we have no reason to look for entire uniformi' ty of opinion on any subject, yet I see noth ing to forbid the hope, that candour, judgment, and the love of truth, applied to the investiga tion, may do much towards effecting a greater degree of unity on this question, than at' pre sent exists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians who otherwise love each other and work together on shared projects and causes nonetheless often disagree on the subject of baptism. Should infants be baptized, or is baptism for believers only? What exactly does baptism mean? What happens, if anything, when someone is baptized? Which is better -- sprinkling or immersion? These disagreements are disheartening to some and confusing to many. The sacrament of baptism from a Reformed perspective is clearly and thoughtfully outlined in this useful book. James Brownson explains the scriptural basis, the theological underpinnings, and the practical implications of this particular element of the faith. Organized into thirty brief, tightly focused chapters -- each of which centers on a key question -- and enhanced by thoughtful discussion questions, The Promise of Baptism will be an important resource for pastors, students, and laypersons seeking to better understand this sacrament that lies at the heart of the church's life. A sampling of key questions addressed: What is a sacrament, and how does it differ from an "ordinance"? What's the relationship between baptism and being "born again"? How do the sacraments bring God's grace to us? Can someone be "saved" without being baptized? Can someone be baptized without being saved? Does baptism take the place of circumcision as the mark of the new covenant? What is "confirmation" or "profession of faith," and what is its relationship to baptism? What happens after baptism?

Book Baptism in the New Testament

Download or read book Baptism in the New Testament written by G. R. Beasley-Murray and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism In The New Testament In this thorough and well-documented study of the sacrament of Holy Baptism, G.R. Beasley-Murray presents a critical defense of the doctrine of believers' baptism on the basis of the New Testament evidences. The author--one of the leading New Testament scholars in England--is himself a Baptist; but his discussion transcends denominatioal lines. Beasley-Murray begins by discussing various rites that precede Christian baptism historically, and analyzes the relationship between these earlier rites and baptism. From these antecedents--Old Testament ritual washings, Jewish proselyte baptism, the lustrations practiced at Qumran, and the baptism of John the Baptist--the author proceeds to the foundations of Christian baptism in the career of Jesus, its emergence as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and its development in the New Testament epistolary literature. In his consideration of the doctrine of Christian baptism as ariculated in the New Testament, Beasley-Murray focuses his attention on the necessity of baptism and its relationship to grace, faith, the Spirit, the church, ethics, and hope. A careful examination of the rise and significance of infant baptism follows, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography and several indices.

Book excerpt: Baptism has been a contested practice from the very beginning of the church. In this volume, Ben Witherington rethinks the theology of baptism and does so in constant conversation with the classic theological positions and central New Testament texts. By placing baptism in the context of the covenant, Witherington shows how advocates of both believer's baptism and infant baptism have added some water to both their theology and practice of baptism.
