Book Collection of Items Related to the Cushing General Hospital Framingham Mass

Download or read book Collection of Items Related to the Cushing General Hospital Framingham Mass written by and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cushing General Hospital was a military hospital, dedicated on January 24, 1944, to care for wounded WW II service men from New England. Over 13,800 soldiers had been treated in less than two years, many brought in ships from seaports in New England and transported by special train. The hospital was named after a pioneer in neurosurgery, Dr. Harvey Cushing who died in 1939, and consisted of almost 100 brick buildings. At the end of the war in 1946, Cushing General Hospital became a Veterans Administration Hospital administering to the Korean War wounded, but closed in 1953 with the construction of a new V. A. Hospital in Boston. The property was deeded to the Commomwealth of Massachusetts and a legislative Act in 1954 established Cushing Hospital. Under the Department of Mental Health the hospital was opened in 1957 after renovation and modernization. It was an accredited hospital and Medicare facility and closed in 1991. Fifty-seven acres of the original 110 acre plot is currently, 2011, managed by the Town of Framingham Dept. of Parks and Recreation as the Cushing Memorial Park. The park offers walking and passive recreation areas and includes the Framingham Peace and 9/11 Memorials. Cushing Memorial Chapel remains as one of the original buildings, now renovated and open for special services. Assisted living housing occupies thirty-six acres of the original site.

Book Grain Boundaries

Download or read book Grain Boundaries written by P. E. J. Flewitt and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2001-04-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years the understanding of grain boundaries, interphase boundaries and free surfaces has advanced greatly, leading to a clear recognition that these discontinuities make a significant contribution to the physical and mechanical properties of materials from multiphase metals and alloys to electronic materials. Grain Boundaries -Their Microstructure and Chemistry discusses the interrelationship between microstructure and chemistry of the grain boundary, with particular emphasis on the influence of the environment (air, liquid and liquid metal) and composition (bulk and impurity). This highly practical volume presents a brief background to interphase and grain boundaries, before considering in detail grain boundary composition and composition changes, and how grain boundary composition affects material properties. Very recent advances in techniques such as electron energy loss spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atom probe, and the facinating new insights into grain boundary, microstructure that they have revealed, are also discussed. Grain Boundaries - Their Microstructure and Chemistry is an indispensable text for design and safety engineers in many industries, including power and aerospace, as well as for materials scientists and engineers in academia and research institutes.

Book Atomistic Studies of Grain Boundaries in Alloys and Compounds Progress Report July 1991 June 1992

Download or read book Atomistic Studies of Grain Boundaries in Alloys and Compounds Progress Report July 1991 June 1992 written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research project we carry out theoretical, computer modeling, studies of the atomic structure of grain boundaries in binary alloys. Both ordered and disordered alloys are investigated. The goal is to analyze those structural, chemical and electronic features that distinguish alloys from pure metals and are responsible for remarkably different intergranular fracture behavior of alloys when compared with pure metals. The most important phenomenon is, of course, segregation and related structural changes in the boundary region. When studying segregation phenomena copper-bismuth is a very suitable model system since bismuth segregation occurs readily, leads to boundary faceting and thus to remarkable changes in the boundary structure, as well as to a very strong embrittlement. Our recent research concentrated on the investigation of the structure of? = 3 (111)/(11{bar 1}) facets formed during segregation from boundaries which were originally curved.

Book Atom Probe Tomography

Download or read book Atom Probe Tomography written by Michael K. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microanalytical technique of atom probe tomography (APT) permits the spatial coordinates and elemental identities of the individual atoms within a small volume to be determined with near atomic resolution. Therefore, atom probe tomography provides a technique for acquiring atomic resolution three dimensional images of the solute distribution within the microstructures of materials. This monograph is designed to provide researchers and students the necessary information to plan and experimentally conduct an atom probe tomography experiment. The techniques required to visualize and to analyze the resulting three-dimensional data are also described. The monograph is organized into chapters each covering a specific aspect of the technique. The development of this powerful microanalytical technique from the origins offield ion microscopy in 1951, through the first three-dimensional atom probe prototype built in 1986 to today's commercial state-of-the-art three dimensional atom probe is documented in chapter 1. A general introduction to atom probe tomography is also presented in chapter 1. The various methods to fabricate suitable needle-shaped specimens are presented in chapter 2. The procedure to form field ion images of the needle-shaped specimen is described in chapter 3. In addition, the appearance of microstructural features and the information that may be estimated from field ion microscopy are summarized. A brief account of the theoretical basis for processes of field ionization and field evaporation is also included.

Book Atomistic Studies of Grain Boundaries in Alloys and Compounds

Download or read book Atomistic Studies of Grain Boundaries in Alloys and Compounds written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic structure and atomic level properties of grain boundaries in binary alloys have been studied theoretically. Both ordered and disordered alloys were investigated with the aim responsible for the physical and mechanical properties differing from pure metals. An integral part is atomic interactions. The first are the many-body potentials akin to the embedded atom method. The most important potentials for Cu-Bi which combined empirical data and ab initio electronic structure calculations to construct reliable potentials. LMTO based tight-binding method were developed fully for pure metals with future application alloys. Structural studies were carried out for disordered Cu-Bi and ordered Ni3Al and Cu3Au alloys. In the former case the investigation was linked with HREM, and result is solution of structure of? = 3 (111)/(11{bar 1}) facets containing Bi formed during segregation from originally curved boundaries. In the latter case, effect of ordering strength and stoichiometry deviations the boundary structure was investigated. The most interesting finding is a very different behavior of Ni rich and Al rich Ni3Al which may explain why only Ni rich compounds can be ductilized by boron. In both cases the surplus element segregates to the boundaries.

Book Observation of Grain Boundary Segregation on an Atomic Scale in a Fe 0 04 P Alloy by Atom probe FIM

Download or read book Observation of Grain Boundary Segregation on an Atomic Scale in a Fe 0 04 P Alloy by Atom probe FIM written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain boundaries introduced intentionally in a Fe-0.04% P alloy by cold-working were successfully observed using a field ion microscope (FIM), and the composition along a grain boundary was analyzed using a high-performance time-of-flight atom-probe. Phosphorus was found to segregate to the grain boundaries below 600°C, in agreement with previous Auger electron spectroscopy studies. In addition to P, it was found that several other elements, such as Ti, O, C and Mn segregate to the grain boundaries at different annealing temperatures.
