Simultaneously, research from the biosciences on the morphology, ecology, distribution, systematics and evolution of extant vascular plants, and on the ecogeographical differentiation of the vegetation cover of our planet, has made enormous progress. Thus, a synthetic geo- and bioscientific approach becomes more and more feasible and urgent for further advances in the many problems of common concern. A symposium organized by the "Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher LEOPOLDINA", attractive to paleo- and neobotanists, stimulated the discussion between specialists of the two disciplines. The main results of the symposium are now presented in this volume: Sixteen international contributions outline the current knowledge about the historical differentiation and evolution of woody plant groups and forests, covering the whole biosphere. This survey, from the beginning of the Tertiary up to the present, is a first systhesis of relevant data from the geo- and biosciences.

Book excerpt: The synthesis presented in this volume is a direct outgrowth of our ten-year FORMAP Project (Forest Mapping Across Eastern North America from 20,000 yr B.P. to the Present). Many previous research efforts in paleoecology have used plant-fossil evidence as proxy information for primarily geologic or climatic reconstructions or as a bio stratigraphic basis for correlation of regional events. In contrast, in this book, we deal with ecological questions that require a holistic perspective that integrates the interactions of biota with their dynamically changing environments over time scales up to tens of thousands of years. In the FORMAP Project, our major research objective has been to use late-Quaternary plant-ecological data sets to evaluate long-term patterns and processes in forest de velopment. In order to accomplish this objective, we have prepared subcontinent-scale calibrations that quantitatively relate the production and dispersal of arboreal pollen to dominance in the vegetation for the major tree types of eastern North America. Quantification of pollen-vegetation relationships provides a basis for developing quan titative plant-ecological data sets that allow further ecological analysis of both individual taxa and forest communities through time. Application of these calibrations to fossil pollen records for interpreting forest history thus represents a fundamental step beyond traditional summaries based upon pollen percentages.

Book excerpt: This study provides a framework biostratigraphy for pollen and spores in the Neogene and Quaternary of Yukon and adjacent Northwest Territories & Alaska. This biozonation is useful for correlating continental rocks with rocks on the northern continental margin, including the petroliferous Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin. This framework biozonation achieves an absolute chronology based on the study of many continental sections where ages are determined by independent and absolute measures. The study assembles the biozonation from seven sections and one borehole, and the palynological spectra from 163 samples from these sections were grouped & averaged to produce 21 composite spectra that depict the long-term pattern of vegetation change ranging from Early Miocene to late Quaternary. Pollen and spores are grouped and summed by environmental tolerances and physiognomy of the modern families & genera of plants to which they are related. Using these groups, pollen and spore ratios are drawn to track environmental parameters (temperature, forest canopy cover, and paludification) of the study sites. Biostratigraphic and paleoecological patterns are explained in terms of known changes in the global climate and the climatic effects of regional tectonics. Six assemblage zones and five subzones are proposed to describe the palynological succession.
