Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a guide for marine conservation practice, Marine Conservation takes a whole-systems approach, covering major advances in marine ecosystem understanding. Its premise is that conservation must be informed by the natural histories of organisms together with the hierarchy of scale-related linkages and ecosystem processes. The authors introduce a broad range of overlapping issues and the conservation mechanisms that have been devised to achieve marine conservation goals. The book provides students and conservation practitioners with a framework for thoughtful, critical thinking in order to incite innovation in the 21st century. "Marine Conservation presents a scholarly but eminently readable case for the necessity of a systems approach to conserving the oceans, combining superb introductions to the science, law and policy frameworks with carefully chosen case studies. This superb volume is a must for anyone interested in marine conservation, from students and practitioners to lay readers and policy-makers." —Simon Levin, George M. Moffett Professor of Biology, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book teaches the basic stages of mapping for ecological projects. It uses QGIS, an open source system, as this is the most accessible platform to produce maps for reports. The book guides the beginner mapmaker through production of maps for the day-to-day projects of ecologists working in consultancy. If you don’t know where to start or how to use QGIS, this is the practical guide for you. There is no jargon, just everything you require to create the desired maps and to extract from them all the information that you’ll need for reporting. You will learn how to create several different sorts of maps frequently employed in ecological reports: - basic survey map - aerial imagery survey map - designated sites map - desk-study map - protected species map - habitats map As a part of this you will also discover how to download third-party maps and datasets, create your own data, geo-reference images and import GPX files into QGIS. Weblinks allow access to downloadable data for use in producing the maps described. The book also includes workflows that you can emulate for your own projects, ensuring that it will remain a helpful tool long after you have completed all the exercises. Ideal for those working in ecological consultancy and conservation, as well as students with an understanding of ecology and surveying but no background or training in QGIS, this handy book will also be a great help to those needing to refresh their GIS skills and/or looking for workflows to follow.

Book The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 written by Nicola Mitchell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lizards and snakes (squamate reptiles) are the most diverse vertebrate group in Australia, with approximately 1000 described species, representing about 10% of the global squamate diversity. Squamates are a vital part of the Australian ecosystem, but their conservation has been hindered by a lack of knowledge of their diversity, distribution, biology and key threats. The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 provides the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of Australian squamates in 25 years. Conservation assessments are provided for 986 species of Australian lizards and snakes (including sea snakes). Over the past 25 years there has been a substantial increase in the number of species and families recognised within Australia. There has also been an increase in the range and magnitude of threatening processes with the potential to impact squamates. This has resulted in an increase in the proportion of the Australian squamate fauna that is considered Threatened. Notably over this period, the first known extinction (post-European settlement) of an Australian reptile species occurred – an indication of the increasingly urgent need for better knowledge and management of this fauna. Six key recommendations are presented to improve the conservation management and plight of Australian squamates. This Action Plan represents an essential resource for research scientists, conservation biologists, conservation managers, environmental consultants, policy makers from Commonwealth and State/Territory governments, and the herpetological community.
